How Old is Prince Charles and How Did He Celebrate His Birthday?
Prince Charles is many things a father, a grandfather, an environmentalist, and the future king of England. With his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as the longest-reigning monarch, he’s also the longest-serving heir apparent in the British royal family’s history.
In 2018, the Prince of Wales reached another milestone and in honor of his big birthday, there were quite a few celebrations. Here’s how old Prince Charles is now and why he celebrated his birthday on a couple different dates.
Prince Charles’ age
On Nov. 14, 2018, Prince Charles turned 70 years old. He has represented the royal family his entire life but recently took on more royal duties for his mother, who is in her ’90s.
Charles is the patron or president of more than 420 charities but has another very important job in a role he’s said to be a natural at. Charles is the paternal grandfather of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis and his fourth grandchild is on the way as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting a baby. William spoke about his dad spending even more time with all his grandkids now that he’s 70.
“I think … he’s reached his 70th year it’s a perfect time to consolidate a little bit because as most families would do, you are worried about having them around and making sure their health’s okay,” the Duke of Cambridge explained. “And he’s the fittest man I know but equally, I want him to be fit until he’s 95. So, having more time with him at home would be lovely, and being able to you know, play with the grandchildren. Because when he’s there, he’s brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible.”

There was no shortage of festivities across the pond to mark the Duke of Cornwall’s big day and they started back in May. His “first birthday” was a garden party at Buckingham Palace on May 22. Then in October, just ahead of his actual birthday, his wife organized a gettogether for him that featured a program of music, opera, ballet, and Shakespearean drama.
Finally, on Nov. 14, the bells at Westminster Abbey rang out, a 62-gun salute went off at the Tower of London before 6,200 cannons fired at the Brexit cabinet meeting at Downing Street. Moreover, the queen reportedly had a private event planned for her son and his friends that evening at the palace.
Clarence House also celebrated by releasing the family portrait of Charles and his loved ones.
Why Prince Charles had more than one birthday
So you may be asking yourself why the Prince of Wales celebrated more than one birthday? The reason for that is because his 70th is considered a major milestone for a future monarch. He is the only other royal to celebrate more than one besides his mother.
Prince Harry and his wife were present for Charles’ birthday six months in advance because they could not attend the bash thrown by the Duchess of Cornwall in October since they were traveling.
Harry gave a touching speech about his dad in the garden that day and said, “Who has not come away from a meeting with my father, their head spinning with a dozen new ideas which he wants to get underway urgently, having met a group of people or read something that has fired his imagination and started the flow of ideas.”
He added, “His enthusiasm and energy are truly infectious; it has certainly inspired William and I to get involved in issues we care passionately about and to do whatever we can to make a difference. In fact, many of the issues William and I now work on are subjects we were introduced to by our father growing up.”
