Drag queen, actor, model, singer, songwriter, and television personality, RuPaul Charles, has taken the world by storm with his undeniable talent, grace, and beauty.
As the host and producer of the hit reality competition, RuPaul’s Drag Race, he is considered to be the most successful drag queen to date and is named one of Time 100’s most influential people in the world.
RuPaul is 58-years-old
RuPaul Andre Charles was born on November 17, 1960 in San Diego, California.
He grew up mainly surrounded by his mother and three sisters since his parents divorced when he was seven.
In 1975, RuPaul moved to Atlanta, Georgia to study performing arts at the age of 15 with dreams of becoming a performer.
For years, he tried becoming a musician and filmmaker but found himself coming up short.
In 1982, RuPaul finally got his big break in acting when he debuted on an Atlanta public access variety show called The American Music Show. Soon after his first appearance, RuPaul made frequent appearances on the show for the next few years.
He began receiving national exposure in 1989
RuPaul finally began receiving recognition in the U.S. after he appeared in drag dancing in the video for “Love Shack” by The B-52’s.
RuPaul soon began appearing in more music videos, parody films, festivals, and the club scene.
In 1993, RuPaul released his very first album, Supermodel of the World, which included the well-known dance track “Supermodel (You Better Work).”
The song received unexpected success and along with the music, it brought mainstream exposure to the world of drag.
The following year, RuPaul became the face and the very spokesperson for Mac Cosmetics’ Viva Glam collection.
In 1996, RuPaul landed his very own talk show, The RuPaul Show, on VH1. Along with his good friend and co-host Michelle Visage, the show featured interviews with celebrity guests and parody skits.
For the next few years, RuPaul continued releasing albums, making guest appearances in television shows and movies, and still performed/hosted drag events in clubs all around the world.
RuPaul’s Drag Race
In 2008, RuPaul began making plans to produce a reality competition where he would showcase drag queens looking to become “America’s next drag superstar.”
The following year, RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered on Logo and shined a light on the world of drag as well as the LGBTQ community.
RuPaul plays the role of host, mentor, and head judge for this series, as contestants are given different challenges each week.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has spanned over eleven seasons and has become one of the highest-rated television shows to date.
Since the show’s premiere, it has earned RuPaul three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has also become the first show to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program in 2018.
Throughout his career, RuPaul has shown the world that he is an entertainer who likes going against society’s norms.
Today, he is considered to be the most commercially successful drag queen in the United States and is credited for bringing mainstream exposure to the LGBTQ culture.
