Rated an incredible 9.5/10 on IMDB and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, Game of Thrones follows the story of nine noble families as they fight for control over the mythical lands of Westeros. While these nobles fight over control, an ancient enemy returns after thousands of years laying dormant.

The show is admittedly racy, but this is in line with the reputation HBO has made for itself. While obviously well-received, this racy reputation often leads fans to wonder how old the cast really is and how old they were when filming began. One such example is Sophie Turner, who plays a young noblewoman named Sansa Stark. How old was Sophie Turner when she started filming Game of Thrones?

Who is Sophie Turner?

Sophie Turner was born on February 21, 1996 in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. She had an early love of acting, and has belonged to the Playbox Theatre Company since she was only three years old. Her big onscreen debut was in the role of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, which opened the door for several other parts.

The character Sansa Stark is the second child and eldest daughter of Lady Catelyn and Lord Eddard Stark. Lord Eddard is the head of House Stark, and the Lord Paramount of the North.

How old was Sophie Turner when filming began?

When Sophie Turner first began filming Game of Thrones, she was thirteen years old. By the time her first episode aired she was nearly fifteen years old.

Turner look back on the day she learned she would play Sansa, stating that “Getting Game of Thrones was amazing. I was 13, on holiday in France, and my mum woke me up saying, ‘Morning Sansa!’ I burst out crying and jumped in the pool.”

Sophie Turner wasn’t allowed to wash her hair

For years during the filming of Game of Thrones, a young Sophie Turner was not allowed to wash her hair. As a young noblewoman in the beginning of the story, she was allowed. As time went on, however, the producers asked her and a number of male cast members to stop. For Turner, this began around the time of the fifth season.

Turner commented on the experience, stating that it was really itchy and that pieces of fake snow would get stuck in the grease build up in her hair. The young actress said that “Now I wear a wig, so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair.”

Turner also dyed her naturally blonde hair red for the role. A combination of not washing and dying her hair had caused significant hair issues, but this has since been remedied with the introduction of a wig in the role of Sansa Stark.

Since her acting debut in Game of Thrones, Turner has gone on to play the roles of Vida in The Thirteenth Tale (2013) and Jean Gray in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). She also appeared in Another Me and Barely Lethal.

Does Turner have any upcoming projects?

The young actress has multiple upcoming projects in the works. Two of her films, Dark Phoenix and Heavy, are set to debut in 2019. Another two projects, Broken Soldier and Girl Who Fell From the Sky, have been announced but do not yet have release dates.
