How the ‘Love Is Blind’ Cast Handles Online Hate

Netflix’s new reality dating show, Love Is Blind, completely blew up. The show’s stars had no idea they were signing up for Instagram fame when they agreed to be a part of the unprecedented “experiment.” They thought there was a good chance that no one would even watch the show.

“We had no idea that it was ever [going to be this popular]. Nothing. It’s the first of its kind. So we didn’t have a franchise to look back at and say ‘Oh this is how we should act,’ or, ‘This is what we should say. Or do,’ and ‘I’m gonna become this person.’ I was just going on it because it felt like it was something fun,” said Giannina Gibelli on an episode of “Love In Sight.”

But with the cast’s fame also, unfortunately, came online hate. It’s something Bachelor stars have been lamenting about in recent years.

How Diamond Jack deals with online hate

Diamond Jack says fans of Carlton Morton’s (her ex-fiancé) will come to her Instagram to “say some very bad things about [her].”

“I’m getting ‘homophobe,’ ‘biphobic.’ Earlier, when it first came out, even some death threats. I had to block several people, several accounts, I don’t know if they’re really even people. But blocked those accounts,” she said in a recent interview with The Domenick Nati Show.

Diamond continued: “I’ve been called a disgusting human being, they talk about my appearance, they talk about my hair, of course. They call themselves Team Carlton so they’ll come to my page and try to say some very bad things about me.”

But Diamond doesn’t let her haters get to her.

“Like I’ve said, I’m built from a strong cloth so those words don’t really hurt me honestly,” she said.

How Carlton Morton deals with online hate

Carlton has said in several interviews that he’s received a lot of online hate since Love Is Blind aired. He’s been having a hard time with it all.

“Really stayed in bed a lot this week because it was a really tough week for me. A lot of backlash from the show. People apparently think that I’m like a horrible person who hates women and that’s just not the case. So I’ve just been trying to do everything I can to protect my mental health at this point,” he said on “Love In Sight.”

He’s currently working on focusing on the support he receives.

“I’m getting so many fans from the UK, which is interesting, that are like totally rallying and like, ‘You didn’t even have to share that information.’ I just feel like it’s something you definitely have to share but you have to share something like that on your time with the world,” he said.

How Giannina Gibelli deals with online hate

Giannina gets her fair share of hateful messages from fans as well.

“I still get, ‘You’re toxic. You’re a child. You’re immature. You’re bipolar. You don’t deserve him.’ And it’s just like, I understand why you would say that because everything that’s shown will pretty much, whenever I look at it, confirm that. But you don’t know me,” she said on “Love In Sight.” She says viewers weren’t in her shoes so they’ll never understand why she acted the way she did.

At the same time, she says she’s done a lot of work on herself since Love Is Blind.

“Through that experience, I was able to grow and learn. And once I saw it on-screen I was like, ‘OK Damian maybe you are right about the way that I yell.’ I thought that that was something normal that I did. That’s just how I grew up. But it was a really big learning experience for me and when people say, ‘Oh, you suck,’ or ‘You’re toxic,’ it’s like, well, I can be. Obviously you can see that. I think we all can be if we’re put in random, extreme situations. But I also did a lot of introspective work within myself within that whole experience. So I get more positive than negative,” she said.
