How Was Gisele Bundchen Discovered?

Gisele Bündchen is one of the most famous supermodels in the world. She’s married to NFL quarterback, Tom Brady, and seems to live a life of glitz and glamour that most people can only dream about. But things weren’t always that way for her, in fact, she didn’t grow up reading fashion magazines and she was discovered in a pretty unlikely place.

Here’s more on that, how she got her start, and the model’s shocking magazine cover that left her unrecognizable to even her biggest fans.

Bündchen was born on July 20, 1980, to parents of Brazilian and German descent and raised in the small town of Horizontina in Southern Brazil. She has five sisters including her fraternal twin, Patricia. In school, Bündchen was a straight-A student and a skilled volleyball player. Back then, she never dreamed of being a model but instead wanted to play volleyball professionally. However, a class trip completely changed that course.

When she was a teenager and at the insistence of others, Bündchen joined a modeling course with two of her sisters. She only agreed to sign up for the class because it included a free trip to São Paulo and she had never been to a big city in her life. After a 25-hour bus ride, she found herself in a shopping mall and eating at McDonald’s for the first time. It was at that moment while enjoying a Big Mac at the fast-food chain that Bündchen was discovered.

A scout for a modeling agency picked her out of 55 other uniformed girls and asked her if she wanted to be a model. At that point, “I’d never seen fashion magazines,” Bündchen recalled.

The teenage beauty eventually decided to give modeling a try and competed in several competitions before moving to New York City in 1996. Shortly after that, she made her debut walking on the runway at New York Fashion Week.

Bündchen later became a Victoria’s Secret Angel and dominated the industry as one of the world’s highest-paid supermodels. Today, she has an estimated net worth of $400 million and although we don’t see her walking in many fashion shows these days, she’s still gracing the covers of magazines all over the world. In September 2018, her appearance on the cover of Vogue Italia had her fans scratching their heads as no one could believe it was her.

Her stunning transformation was done to honor the iconic Italian star, Mina Mazzini, and her six decades in the music business. Bündchen watched hours of YouTube videos to get the singer’s facial expressions just right for the photoshoot.

Even though she has been on more than 2,000 magazine covers, the Brazilian beauty has stated that she does not consider herself a model.

“I’m not a model,” she previously told Vogue. “Modeling is a job that I do, a career that I’ve had. It allowed me to see the world, and I was well paid for it. But it never defined me.”

Over the years, Bündchen has been involved in many other business ventures and has done humanitarian work as well. She supports and has donated to several different organizations and causes including  Zero Hunger Program, Product Red initiative, Japanese Red Cross Society, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital to name a few.
