Hugh Jackman’s days as Wolverine will soon come to an end and the actor is already looking to follow up his X-Men gig with an epic new role. The star is reportedly in early talks to play Odysseus in Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.
The Odyssey, one of two epic Greek poems attributed to Homer, chronicles the story of Odysseus and his decade-long journey home after the fall of Troy. Francis Lawrence, the director of the final three The Hunger Games sequels, is already on board to helm the movie version, based on a script from Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2). Now, the project is looking to nail down its star.
According to The Wrap, Jackman is still only in conversations with the studio and hasn’t officially closed a deal to star in the film just yet. Should he choose to sign on, he would take on the lead role of Odysseus, who faces many trials –most of which are put before him by feuding Greek gods – on his journey back to Ithaca.
Bringing a classic work like The Odyssey to the screen is inarguably a hugely ambitious project. Still, Lawrence has brought a lot of success to Lionsgate with his Hunger Games films, so it’s no surprise that the studio is willing to hand him the reins to another big-budget blockbuster. But while having a strong creative team may put the adaptation off to a strong start, Jackman’s participation would undoubtedly elevate the project to a whole new level. With his formidable star power and impressive acting chops (not to mention, the fact that he looks the part), the actor seems like the ideal match for the major role.
For Jackman, the project comes as the actor is looking ahead to his future post-Wolverine. The star is set to reprise his most well known role in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as in a final solo movie, due in 2017. For fans who have been wondering what type of movies he’ll take on after his X-Men era, The Odyssey is the first hint at the direction the actor might be going in in the future. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if Jackman officially signs on to the adaptation, which is expected to begin production sometime next year.
In the meantime, the actor has plenty on his plate. Aside from his Wolverine duties, the star has a slew of notable new films set to hit the big screen over the next year. He will next appear as Captain Hook in Warner Bros.’ Pan in October. The actor will co-star in the sports comedy-drama, Eddie the Eagle, in April, as well as portray P.T. Barnum in the biographical drama, The Greatest Showman on Earth, due for release in December 2016.
Jackman is also staying busy off screen. As he recently announced, the actor will embark on an arena tour called Broadway to Oz in November. The tour, which is billed as a journey through Jackman’s life, will take place in five cities across his native Australia.
