Idris Elba Has Tested Positive for Coronavirus; ‘No Panic.’
Idris Elba is the latest celebrity to test positive for COVI-19 also known as the Coronavirus. The virus has been labeled as a pandemic and is spreading rapidly across the globe taking the lives of thousands of people and causing many cities to shut down. As things continue to escalate, celebrities have begun to use their platforms to urge people to take the situation seriously and practice social distancing. Furthermore, a few celebrities have also tested positive for the virus.
Idris Elba reveals he tested positive for Coronavirus
Last week, it was revealed that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have contracted Coronavirus. Today, March 16, 2020, Elba revealed via Twitter that he too has tested positive for the terrible virus. “This morning I tested positive for Covid 19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing. No panic,” Elba tweeted out alongside a video.
In the video, Elba goes into further details about Coronavirus and why he made the decision to get tested. The “Beasts of No Nation” actor shared in the video that last week he discovered that he’d recently come in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus. Knowing this, Elba made the decision to get tested for the virus and self-quarantine until such a point that he could got his test results back.
Elba’s wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, has not been tested for COVI-19
Unfortunately for Elba, his test results came back positive. But fortunately, he is not experiencing any symptoms. His wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, has not been tested but so far is feeling okay also. Elba shared that he would continue to monitor the situation and keep the public informed about his experiences with Coronavirus. Furthermore, the 47-year-old revealed that he had a strong support system and would continue to self-quarantine.
Amidst his announcement, Elba also encouraged fans to protect themselves and others amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. He encouraged people to wash their hands frequently and avoid going out if it wasn’t necessary. He also urged people not to panic, but to do their part to protect others by practicing social isolation even if they weren’t experiencing any symptoms.
Fans show their support for Elba on Twitter
Fans immediately began sending Elba well wishes after learning that he tested positive for Coronavirus. They also expressed gratitude that he was doing his part to help keep the public informed. “Thanks for sharing. People need to understand anyone can be affected and you don’t have to be symptomatic to spread the virus. Best wishes!” one fan tweeted out. Others expressed their continued outage about the virus. “IMMA BEAT THAT BI*CH CORONA’S A*S. SO HELP ME GOD,” one person promised.
The inequities of Coronavirus
Others sympathized with Elba, but couldn’t help but notice the inequity that Elba’s wealth, influence, and fame provided him with. They found it disheartening that some people (who are experiencing Coronavirus symptoms) weren’t getting the proper care. “How did you get tested without having any symptoms but yet people with symptoms get turned away? Further… Stay Strong,” one person wrote to the “Cats” star.
It’s great that Elba has taken this as an opportunity to educate his fans about the dangers of Coronavirus. Like it or not, celebrities yield a lot of influence and can impact how people react to the news. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope that others who have also tested positive for the virus and/or are experiencing symptoms are able to get the care they need and deserve ASAP.
How you can help stop the rapid spread of Coronavirus
In the interim, there are things that everyone can do to help stop the rapid spread of Coronavirus. Do your part by washing your hands regularly and thoroughly, coughing/sneezing into your elbow, practicing social distancing, staying at home if you’re feeling sick, and avoiding touching your face. Hopefully, we can get through this by working together.
