Idris Elba Says He’s Not Interested in Hearing ‘The Dark Tower’ Criticism
The Dark Tower was received negatively by critics and fans when it was released last month, but the film’s star, Idris Elba, isn’t interested in hearing your complaints.
In a recent interview with Mashable, Elba said it’s difficult to adapt a book like The Dark Tower, and people who had complaints about the film should try doing so themselves.
“Ultimately, everyone has an opinion and that’s okay,” he said. “I’d imagine that a film like The Dark Tower—if you know anything about the literature—it’s a very hard book to digest, and it’s definitely a hard book to adapt. Until one of the reviewers that had something to say adapts it and does a great job, well I don’t want to hear what they have to say.”
The Dark Tower received a score of 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics saying that it was a rushed and poorly executed adaptation of a classic novel that doesn’t exactly inspire any excitement about the rest of the series. Actors and directors often say that poorly-reviewed films are for the fans and not the critics, but fans did not really embrace The Dark Tower either. The film has a 54 percent approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes users, and it has a score of 6.0 out of 10 on IMDB.
These negative reviews clearly kept away audiences, as The Dark Tower only grossed $48 million at the box office. For comparison, It recently made $51 million on Friday night alone, meaning that film grossed more in a single day than The Dark Tower did in its entire run. But the movie did not end up being a complete disaster, largely because its budget was only $60 million. Factoring in international gross, The Dark Tower ended up taking in $107 million, and so while it was obviously not the hit that Sony was hoping for, it wasn’t a total catastrophe either.
Still, Idris Elba confirmed in this interview with Mashable that he’s going to be involved in the upcoming Dark Tower TV series. The plan with this recent movie was for it to serve as a kind of pilot episode to a TV show, which would go into production in 2018 with The Walking Dead‘s Glen Mazzara serving as showrunner. The show is evidently moving forward despite the movie’s mixed reception, but it has not yet found a network or streaming service.
