If You Liked ‘Hamilton,’ Here Are a Few Other Classic Musicals to Watch on Disney’s Streaming Platform, Disney+
This live musical premiered during the beginning of July and already is one of the most popular movies on Disney’s streaming platform. If you’ve already seen it, though, and you’re looking for something new to binge-watch, Disney+ has you covered. From High School Musical to The Sound of Music, here are a few movies and stage productions to watch on Disney+ if you like Hamilton.
The award-winning musical, ‘Moana’
The ocean chose this curly-haired girl to save the world. Moana, which premiered in 2016, tells the story of this powerful princess, who travels across the sea to restore the heart of Te Fiti. This classic is available on Dinsey’s streaming platform.
This animated musical also features a few of the voices from the original Hamilton cast. Lin-Manuel Miranda performs on “We Know The Way,” while Christopher Jackson (George Washington) voices Moana’s dad on the song “Where You Are.”
‘High School Musical’ and ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’
They’re all in this together. As one of Disney Channel’s original movies, High School Musical tells the story of some students as they break barriers and do a few jazz squares along the way. All three movies in this trilogy are available on Disney+.
Disney+ even has its own original spinoff series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is a mockumentary-style story of high school students who put on a stage production of Disney’s musical. There’s even the series Encore, which features adults who return to the stage to act in their childhood stage productions.
‘The Sound of Music’
Another musical theater favorite-turned movie musical, The Sound of Music is available on Disney’s streaming platform. This musical includes iconic songs like “Do-Re-Mi” and a pretty uplifting and fun story.
The Sound of Music, released a few decades ago, received a total of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Princess Diaries actor Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a postulant who is sent to the home of widower Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) to be governess to his seven precocious children.
The 2019 adaptation of ‘The Lion King’
There are a few Disney live-action remakes available with a subscription to Disney+. That includes one of their most recently reboots, the photo-real adaptation of The Lion King, which features performers like Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) as Simba and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala.
In fact, the artist released an album featuring African musicians and producers, The Lion King: The Gift. She took her involvement one step further, partnering with Disney+ for more content. Beyoncé’s visual album, Black is King, inspired by the story of The Lion King, will premiere on July 31, 2020.
