When ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ Takes Place in the Series’ Timeline
The first trailer for Insidious: The Last Key has just been unveiled. The first two entries into this James Wan horror series took place right after one another, but the third one was a prequel to the first two. So when is Insidious: The Last Key set in the series’ timeline? Is this after Insidious: Chapter 3, or after Insidious: Chapter 2?
Insidious: The Last Key takes place after Insidious: Chapter 3 but before the original Insidious, meaning it’s another prequel. In terms of the timeline, then, the correct order of films is Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, Insidious, and finally Insidious: Chapter 2.
Strangely, the trailer for The Last Key suggests the opposite, as Elise makes reference to “facing many evils” and a scene from the first Insidious is shown. But we know when Insidious: The Last Key takes place because actress Lin Shaye confirmed it in an interview back in 2016.
“In general, it goes back to Elise’s beginnings,” she told Daily Dead. “And you also meet Elise at a very different point in her life. It takes place right after the end of Chapter 3, when she walks off with Specs and Tucker and they’re starting their company, Spectral Sightings, and they are now living at her home. They’re like her two sons, her two bad sons.”
Shaye also said in that interview that Elise’s family is a major focus in the film and you meet her mother and father. This fits with what’s in the first trailer for The Last Key, which involves Elise visiting the home where she grew up in New Mexico. Most of the other characters in the film are brand new to this franchise.
This means that the ending of Insidious: Chapter 2 will once again not be followed up on in this movie. Fans will recall that the second film ended with Elise’s spirit entering the home of a girl in a coma, only to see something mysterious standing in the shadows. Elise exclaims, “Oh my god,” and the film cuts to black. It was never revealed what happened next, as the next chapter was a prequel and now the fourth one will be a prequel as well.
Insidious: The Last Key opens on January 5, 2018. It is directed by Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan) and written by Leigh Whannell, the screenwriter behind the first three Insidious films.
