CRAVITY Ignite Their Ambition With ‘Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice’

CRAVITY debuted with Starship Entertainment in April 2020. Their name combines the meanings of “creativity” and “gravity,” and from the start, it was clear CRAVITY would be unstoppable. With concerts indefinitely on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the K-pop group debuted with an online showcase.

Nearly a year later, Serim, Allen, Jungmo, Woobin, Wonjin, Minhee, Hyeongjun, Taeyoung, and Seongmin have three albums and a number of rookie awards under their belt. Perhaps nothing displays their ambition more than their third EP, Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice, which was released on Jan. 19.

The third album in their Hideout series, Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice shows the members coming together following their journey as trainees and rookies. Over email, Showbiz Cheat Sheet spoke with the members of CRAVITY about Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice, their debut year, and their love for their fan base, LUVITY.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

CRAVITY on ‘Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice’

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Hi everyone! After a successful debut, how does it feel to be releasing your third album?

Jungmo: It still feels like we debuted yesterday, but we’re already releasing our third album. I’m so stoked and I can’t wait to enjoy more adventures.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What can you tell us about this new album?

Taeyoung: This album is the third season of the Hideout series, and it depicts the process of “them,” who were different beings, becoming “us” through empathy and connection.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Do you each have a favorite song on the album? If so, why is it your favorite?

Minhee: “Give Me Your Love.” The lyrics express how much we want to be loved by our fans. I like it because I can relate it to the lyrics.

Woobin: My favorite is “Dangerous.” It feels like the lyrics, melody, and atmosphere of the song are all stimulating my instinct.

Taeyoung: Definitely, “Bad Habits” is my favorite track. I love the unique vibe of the chorus so much.

CRAVITY’s goals for their new album

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Serim, Allen, and Wonjin – you all have songwriting credits on Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice. Can you expand on your creative process for the songs you wrote?

Serim: I wrote the lyrics at the dawn. It is common to write down the main characters of dramas or movies that I watched, or my own stories. I usually imagine myself in a situation and write down how I would feel.

Wonjin: It was very difficult at first. I think it took about two hours just to write the first line. Everything was hard at the beginning from choosing the right words but I’m glad that the story was well delivered!

Allen: When I write lyrics I tend to take inspiration from the little things whether that’d be from something I heard that stuck with me or something as simple as writing according to the topic we receive when we’re first assigned to write. I also think about our fans a lot and try to imagine how they would receive my lyrics as if I’m talking to them directly.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Did you have any specific goals for this comeback?

Taeyoung: I’m going to keep working hard so our name “CRAVITY” can be recognized for our great performance.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: The title of this album is “Be Our Voice.” How do the nine of you want to use your voice as CRAVITY and as individuals?

Seongmin: I’d like to sing various genres of music with my voice. All I want is to make our fans happy.

How the members connect with one another

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “My Turn” is a great example of your ambition as a group. What encourages you to keep striving toward your dreams?

Hyeongjun: I would say it’s because of LUVITY, who always support us and send us love, which keeps us moving forward. So, we definitely want to repay their support by presenting them with the best music and performances for a long time.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: This album shows CRAVITY realizing that your existence is important, and that you can rely on each other. How do the nine of you show support and comfort to your fellow members?

Woobin: Since we know each other well in regards to preferences, characteristics, and so on, it helps us to be considerate of our members’ feelings and try to be thoughtful towards one another. We also try to understand and sympathize well when it comes to sharing our feelings and concerns.

Seongmin: We try to share our thoughts and concerns when one of us has a problem to solve. We try to listen well to each other’s concerns and thoughts. We also show our best teamwork by working together to resolve any issues. These progressions made us become one.

CRAVITY on their debut year

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Looking at the song “Bad Habits,” do any of you have bad habits you are trying to break?

Wonjin: I tried to break my habit of staying up late. It was actually fine for me to go to bed late when we didn’t have promotions, but it was so hard to stay up late during our album promotions. So, I was thinking that I should go to bed early these days.

Jungmo: Wrinkling my nose! Since I used to wear glasses in the past, I have a habit of wrinkling my nose, which I am trying to break.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Conversely, what are some good habits that you have gotten into since debuting as CRAVITY?

Seongmin: Reading letters from LUVITY is the “good habit” I have. Reading the letters I’ve received from our fans, LUVITY, gives me energy and brightens up my whole day. I believe it is a good habit and a method to start and end my day with happiness.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You swept a number of rookie awards and notably won New Artist of the Year at the Melon Music Awards. What was it like to receive these recognitions for your debut year?

Minhee: I’m really honored and feel grateful about it. But I think we still have a long way to go and there’s a lot to learn. Our members and I try our best so we can achieve more and reach the top!

Hyeongjun: It feels amazing and so good that I can’t express it in words. It’s a prize that we can only win once, so it’s like a driving force for us to run to the top.

CRAVITY’s appreciation for LUVITY

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What is one thing you hope LUVITY take away from Season 3. Hideout: Be Our Voice?

Serim: I hope you could make the year 2021 as yours! Make it into your turn like our title track “My Turn.” I hope you can do everything you want to do with confidence!

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Besides your fans and performing as CRAVITY, what is something that is bringing you happiness these days?

Hyeongjun: Lying on a fluffy pillow. It makes me feel really good.

Allen: I think just being alive and having my members who love and take care of me is really a blessing and something to be happy about.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Lastly, what are your hopes for CRAVITY this year?

Minhee: For this year, doing concerts will be a big goal for me!

Woobin: Having a concert in front of LUVITY!

Serim: I really want to spread the name of CRAVITY and want to meet our fans (both domestic and foreign fans) as soon as the situation gets better.

Wonjin: Finding our group’s color which could be a small but big goal for us. And being able to feel the love and support from LUVITY for a long time would be my dream goal!

Jungmo: Having a concert would be a goal. We’d love to perform in front of our fans (in person!)

Allen: This year I hope to announce to the world that it’s officially “My Turn” that CRAVITY is here and ready to take on the future of the K-pop and global music scene. Most importantly I hope all our members would be able to be healthy all the time and not get hurt.
