Is ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Coming To DVD Before It Is Released On Digital?

Marvel fans cannot wait for the release of Avengers: Endgame, though the studio is planning on doing things a little different this time around. Digital versions of movies are typically released before DVD and Blu-ray, but Marvel is planning to switch things up by releasing hard copies of Endgame before the digital version hits various platforms. Why is the digital copy being delayed?

‘Avengers: Endgame’ to be released on DVD first

To date, the standard in the movie industry is to release the digital version of a film before the hard copy. DVDs and Blu-rays are usually released several weeks after the digital, which is sent out as quickly as possible to prevent piracy. But there is a good reason why Disney has decided to wait on the digital version of Endgame.

According to Express, Disney plans to release Endgame as part of its new streaming service, Disney+. The film will be released exclusively on the new platform, which means the only way fans can stream it is through Disney. The company recently announced that the digital version of Endgame will be available on Dec. 11th, which is around six months after the DVD copy will hit stores.

One thing to note is that Disney’s streaming service is only available in the United States, so customers in other countries should be able to obtain digital versions much sooner. It is unclear where people will be able to purchase the movie digitally, though it sounds like it should be available through multiple platforms.

There have also been rumors that Disney will change their minds and release Endgame normally, mainly due to the success they know that the digital copy will have. If that is the case, it could be released on July 30, meaning it might still be in theaters.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ on pace to outsell ‘Avatar’

While fans will likely be unhappy about the digital news, Avengers: Endgame is still crushing it at the box office. So far, the movie has grossed $2.73 billion in worldwide box office sales. With Avatar sitting at $2.788 billion, Marvel’s latest superhero ensemble is about to break the record for the highest-earning movie of all time.

Right now, Endgame is sitting at second place ahead of James Cameron’s other critical success, Titanic. With a few more weekends to go, it is only a matter of time before Endgame breaks the record.

When it comes to the domestic box office numbers, Endgame has already passed Avatar but is sitting at second behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Endgame currently has $824 million in domestic sales while The Force Awakens had $936 million. Depending on how much longer Endgame remains in the theater, there is a good chance that it breaks both records, though hitting the domestic mark will be much harder.

By releasing the film on its new streaming platform, Disney hopes to ride this popularity and get its new project off to a great start. Whether or not fans will wait six months for the DVD version, however, is yet to be determined.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ director open up about the scene that made him cry

There were plenty of moments in Endgame that were difficult to handle on an emotional level. While fans were sad to see many of their favorite characters die or leave the franchise, director Joe Russo revealed that one scene really pulled on his heartstrings.

Being a father to four children, Russo admitted that watching Hawkeye lose his kids to the snap made him cry. He also understands why Hawkeye went rogue after what happened and felt a need to get justice any way possible. Hawkeye, of course, eventually found his way back to the team, though many fans were unhappy with how the movie handled the scene on Vormir.

In response to the backlash over Black Widow’s death, Russo revealed that they had originally planned on Hawkeye going over the edge of the cliff. But female members of the staff told them that it was a bad idea. They apparently did not like how Black Widow was robbed of an amazing moment of self sacrifice and felt like she should be the one to die to obtain the soul stone.

Fans can still watch Avengers: Endgame in theaters. Marvel’s next offering, Spider-Man: Far From Home, opens in theaters July 2.
