People often speculate about the nature of Beyoncé and Solange’s relationship. But we know that they have at least one thing in common: their desire for privacy. Like her big sister, Solange tends to keep many aspects of her personal life low-key, ranging from her life in New Orleans to her family.
She’s also tight-lipped when it comes to her relationships, which might make you whether she’s in one. So, what’s the deal? Is Solange single, dating, or married?
Solange’s relationship status is complicated
“I was the one who approached him, so I have always sort of historically been one of those girls that goes after something that I’m into,” Solange explained in an old interview with Nicole Bitchie. “I’m not very old school and like, I’m not gonna wait on you. Wait for you to approach me type of situation.”
Six years later, in November of 2014, Solange and Ferguson married in an all-white ceremony in New Orleans.
After tying the knot, they collaborated musically when Ferguson helped create the visuals for songs such as “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Cranes in the Sky,” from Solange’s third album, A Seat at the Table (2016). Ferguson has also directed videos for acts such as Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Janelle Monáe, The Notorious B.I.G., and Beyoncé.
But their relationship eventually fizzled. On Nov. 1, 2019, Solange announced on Instagram that she and Ferguson had separated “earlier” in the year.
Ferguson was Solange’s second husband
Solange’s first husband was her junior high school sweetheart, Daniel Smith, whom Solange married in 2004 while pregnant with their son, Julez. Following Julez’s birth, they moved to Idaho, where Smith was in college.
“It was one of the most bittersweet moments of my life because I was so in love with Julez, and having spent a lot of time on the road, I yearned to be in one place, to have the opportunity to really ground myself with him,” Solange, a Houston native, told Elle magazine of the move in a 2017 interview. “But it was isolating and lonely, and so cold and dark. And it was just Julez and me most of the time. It was hard to imagine being able to progress in my career in any way.”
Solange filed for divorce in 2006, and it was finalized the following year.
In a later interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Solange said that she felt older “in a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally,” because she had gone through so much at an early age.
“Just going through a marriage and a divorce—which I essentially did by 21—will give you an insane amount of perspective on life,” she continued.
But she noted to the publication that she and Smith “co-parent really well.”
Who else has Solange dated?
In her early teenage years, Solange used to date then-B2K lead singer, Omarion. The couple never went public with their relationship, though, with Solange later saying on Instagram that she hid it “because I was scared dem b2k fans would try to cut me, lol.”
She also allegedly dated rapper Wale following her divorce from Smith. The couple also kept quiet about the romance, but in 2018, Wale seemed to confirm longstanding rumors that his 2011 hit song, “Lotus Flower Bomb,” was inspired by Solange.
“Solange is a beautiful person, inside and out,” he continued in an interview on Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast. “She’s also been one of my muses, not saying I’m Andy Warhol – in my mind I am. She’s like the prototype of women I personally like.”
“Me and her, we used to kick it, like we was real cool, early on in my career,” Wale added. “She taught me a lot about just music and just spontaneity and everything like that, but you know it ain’t nothing like that.”
It’s unclear whether she’s dating amid her separation from Ferguson (though there are rumors after she was seen with a mystery man earlier this year). But we’ll let you know if, or when, she does.
