Is Bravo Creating Another ‘Southern Charm?’
Bravo may be ready to add another installment to the Southern Charm franchise. A recent casting call is looking for “movers, shakers, and socialites” in Jackson, Mississippi.
The wildly successful show is entering season 6 starting in May, promising as much drama and voyeuristic views of gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina as ever. Most of the previous cast members will return, but others, like Thomas Ravenel, are no longer on the show. Ravenel, who comes from a well-known Charleston family, was arrested last year for sexually assaulting his nanny. Ravenel also assaulted another woman as well.
Beyond Southern Charm in Charleston, Bravo also has a series running in New Orleans and Savannah. So what are casting agents looking for to staff the potential new series in Jackson?
Looking for ‘VIP access’
The casting flyer reads like a “who’s who” of Jackson, Mississippi. Agents are looking for people who
Additionally, agents want to talk to anyone from a large local family political dynasty or those with deep roots in the community. Current Charleston cast members like Kathryn Dennis (plus Ravenel) come to mind.
Finally, any “proud” southerners should consider applying too. Also, people who are considered to be the “unofficial mayor of Jackson.” Calling aspiring Shep Rose candidates.
Agents are also looking for those in a hot social circle too
Famous and infamous residents aren’t the only people who should apply. Like other Southern Charm installments, casting agents want fun and social cast members too. For example, Craig Conover isn’t orginally from Charleston, but he brings that zest and controversy the show thrives upon.
Other cast members too like Cameran Eubanks, Austen Kroll, and Chelsea Meissner are all Charleston transplants. But they party with the main cast and are a great fit for the cast. And sometimes, even the right girlfriend or boyfriend can end up joining the cast fulltime. Naomie Olindo was Conover’s girlfriend when she was introduced to the show. Even though the two broke up, Olindo’s personality and charm helped her to become a fulltime cast member on her own.
Spin-off ratings have been meh
Although the flagship Southern Charm series has received rave reviews and a solid following the spin-off shows are still lagging a bit in the ratings. Southern Charm Savannah found itself somewhere in the middle of the evening rating rank during its first season. The show premiered to respectable ratings in 2017, attracting 757,000 viewers in the 18 to 49-year-old demographic. Season 3 is still pending.
Even though Southern Charm New Orleans saw a continued drop in viewership, the show was renewed for a second season. “After debuting April 25 to just more than 1 million viewers, it saw a decline in viewership with nearly every episode,” according to NOLA. “Those numbers rebounded slightly with the Season 1 finale on June 3, which drew 870,000 viewers, according to figures from Showbuzz Daily. That was apparently good enough to persuade Bravo to take another trip down the bayou.”
With another installment to the Southern Charm franchise on the horizon, could viewers end up with a little fatigue? Or would another helping of southern drama be just the ticket?
