Is Chris Hemsworth Done Playing Thor?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been an enormous success for Marvel Studios. To date, the franchise has brought in over $16 billion worldwide, making it the most successful franchise in history. The upcoming Avengers: Endgame promises to be the biggest installment of the series, but it could also be the end of the line for some of its stars?
Chris Hemsworth has played Thor, the God of Thunder since 2011. He has appeared in six Marvel Universe Films, with Avengers: Endgame set to be his seventh and possibly final movie as Thor. Hemsworth contract will expire at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Does this mean this will be fans’ last chance to see the actor as Thor?
Hemsworth got his big break on another mega-franchise
The Avengers is one of the most popular and most profitable franchises of all time. The tremendous success has helped boost the careers of many of its stars. Though Hemsworth’s star catapulted after landing the role of Thor, he actually got his start on another massively successful franchise.
Hemsworth began acting in 2002, taking small, relatively unnoticed parts. In 2009, Hemsworth landed the role of George Kirk in the reboot of the popular sci-fi film, Star Trek. Hemsworth appeared in the 2009 opener and returned for the 2013 follow up, Star Trek Into the Darkness. There were talks about a possible fourth installment to the Star Trek series which would bring back Hemsworth’s character, but contract negotiations fell through.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ marks the end of a few Marvel contracts
Many of the characters that we have helped create the Marvel Comics Universe were made possible thanks to very long contracts set up by Marvel president, Kevin Feige. According to CBR, these contracts, often consisting of six to nine movies were enticing incentives to many of the stars including Hemsworth.
Chris Evans revealed on Good Morning America last year that these contracts were coming to an end soon for some of the series’ key players. According to Evans, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Hemsworth, and Evans (Captain America) will all see the end of their contract when Avengers: Endgame is completed. Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) are rumored to be nearing the end of their contract as well.
Is this the end of Thor?
There are a few questions left to be answered about the fate of the God of Thunder. It seems unlikely that Marvel would not want to capitalize on the success that the character has brought to the franchise. Thor: Ragnarok was well-received by both critics and audiences and brought in over $313 million domestically. Even if Hemsworth is out, there is a very good chance the part could be recast.
But we’re not too certain that Hemsworth is done playing the Norse God. The actor told USA Today, “It’s sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing.” He went on to say that he has discussed future plans for the character with director Taika Waititi and feels like there is a bigger platform to explore if they wanted to.
What’s next for Hemsworth?
Outside of the Avengers, Hemsworth has most recently appeared in 12 Strong and Bad Times at the El Royale. Moving forward, the actor has a couple of movies on deck. Men in Black: International and Dhaka are both in post-production and are scheduled to be released this year. Time will tell if we see Hemsworth return to the Marvel world in the future.
Could this be the end of the Marvel Universe as we know it? Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26, 2019. If it is the end, Marvel is sure to deliver an epic final bow.
