Is DC Still Making a ‘Wonder Woman’ Sequel With Gal Gadot?

With the recent success of DC films such as Aquaman and Shazam!, a lot of fans are wondering what the future has in store for DC’s favorite superheroine, Wonder Woman.

The first Wonder Woman movie came out in 2017, so is DC still planning on making another one with actress Gal Gadot? Here’s what we know about the sequel.

Gal Gadot was the star of 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’

Former Miss Israel Gal Gadot gained huge notoriety when she signed on to play Wonder Woman in the DC film universe. Her first appearance was a cameo in the 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and she subsequently became the star of her own solo film, Wonder Woman, in 2017.

Wonder Woman went on to gross more than $800 at the box office (against a budget of $120 to $150 million) and was praised for its amazing female lead, stunning visuals, as well as fantastic soundtrack.

Although Gal Gadot did not earn a lot from the film, she still loves how historic Wonder Woman was for women everywhere. “I remember when I was watching the movie, I got so emotional on the battlefield scene, when you see all the women ride the horses, and twirling the-their swords, and looking so strong, and beautiful, and royal, and capable,” she shared.

Gal Gadot will return to the big screen in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

Fans of Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman will be happy to know that another movie is in currently in production, and both of them will be back on the big screen. Patty Jenkins, the director for 2017’s Wonder Woman has also returned to direct the sequel.

Called Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel will take place during the Cold War and see Diana Prince making enemies with some people from the Soviet Union. However, the story will mostly take place in the United States.

Steve Trevor, Diana Prince’s love interest in the first movie who died when his plane exploded, will appear again. Fans are definitely very curious to know why or how Steve (played by Chris Pine) is here and there are a lot of theories going around. Some think that he will just appear as a figment of Diana’s hallucinations while others believe that a villain has taken over Steve’s dead body and will reveal itself after it has tricked Diana.

Speaking of villain, it has been confirmed that the main antagonist in Wonder Woman 1984 will be Cheetah. Although this character has had different names throughout the history of Wonder Woman, this time Cheetah will be Barbara Minerva, a British archaeologist who became a Cheetah goddess after going through an ancient ritual in the lost city of Uzkartaga. Cheetah will be played by Saturday Night Live comedian Kristen Wiig.

Filming for Wonder Woman 1984 took place for several months in 2018 and concluded in December. The film is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2020.

Patty Jenkins also revealed that she is already planning for the third Wonder Woman film. Not much is known yet at this point, but Jenkins has said that it will most likely not be set in the past like the other two movies.

Jenkins shared:

“It’s definitely one of the things we talked about. I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.”

However, since the second film still has a while to go before being released, we will have to wait before knowing more about the third film.
