Is Derick Dillard’s Mom, Cathy, Still in Poor Health?

Many of us were first introduced to the Duggar family years ago on 19 Kids and Counting — and we haven’t stopped watching them since. It all started with Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, the parents of 19 children they’ve raised in an ultra-religious and strict household. And over the years, we’ve had the chance to watch the older Duggar children marry off and start families of their own. One couple we continue to keep track of via social media, Jill Duggar and husband Derick Dillard, are particularly interesting to fans due to Derick’s continued brushes with controversy.

Before fans became super divided on Derick, however, we remember when his mother, Cathy, was featured on 19 Kids. And we also recall her very serious struggles with cancer. Now, years later, fans are wondering how her health is.

19 Kids and Counting showed Cathy in the hospital for cancer

We hear about Jill’s parents, Michelle and Jim Bob, all the time — but Derick’s parents had a sadder backstory that viewers got to experience on the TLC show. Back in 2014, Entertainment Tonight released a clip that showed Cathy Dillard in the hospital for Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Derick and Jill weren’t even married at the time, though they were engaged and planning their big, beautiful wedding. Unfortunately, Cathy’s severe cancer diagnosis made her unable to help with many of the festivities — and she was even forced to miss the rehearsal dinner.

Cathy proved she was a force to be reckoned with, however. She underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and battled the illness for months before seeing any progress. Hollywood Life even notes the Dillard family was worried when Cathy was seemingly making very little progress, but thanks to good treatments and her fortitude, she was able to make it through.

She noted back in 2015 that she was cancer-free

Now that 19 Kids and Counting is long over and Derick and Jill aren’t a part of Counting On, fans rarely hear about Cathy anymore. But back in 2015, she reassured everyone with this photo of a wig on her Instagram that her cancer was totally gone. “Yes, it’s a wig. Yes I lost my hair–twice! Lots of people have asked, now you know!” she captioned the post.

She’s received a ton of support from fans along the way, too. As one commenter said, “I have been praying for you and think you are the bravest person ever.” And another lovingly added, “Hair doesn’t make you beautiful. Because you are already beautiful!”

Wig or not, there’s no doubt Cathy is grateful to be alive and thriving, too, as she’s posted more recent updates of her kids, Derick and Dan, and their wives. And she seems like she’s a fantastic grandmother to the littlest members of the Dillard family, too, which include Derick and Jill’s two boys.

Today, Cathy is healthier than ever

For some cancer survivors, the disease returning is a real threat — but so far, Cathy seems like she’s in the best health we’ve ever seen her in. And back in April 2018, she even posted this photo on her Instagram showing her riding a stationary bike at work. “Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 4 years ago today…celebrating being cancer free by riding a stationary bike at work cuz they’re building new cubicles in our office!” she captioned the photo.

In Touch Weekly also notes she further explained how dire her diagnosis was on Twitter — and it’s truly a miracle that she made such an amazing recovery. “4 years ago today I had a CT scan that showed my liver & spleen looked ‘like Swiss cheese’, as the doctor put it,” she wrote. “It wouldn’t do any good’ were his actual words… and so it began. Pass the turkey & rye please!”

She’s more active than ever on Instagram, too. She recently posted a photo of a Christmas ornament one of her grandchildren made her. “First of many I’m sure!” she added.
