If you hadn’t heard of Fleabag before this year’s Emmy’s, you have now. The BBC comedy show stole the stage at the award show, winning actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge her first award for Outstanding Lead Actress.
Killing Eve was another one of her creations, but she’s no longer writing on the show. She wants a new writer every season so the show stays fresh.
She earned a few Emmy nominations for writing the first season, but her successor, Emerald Fennell, earned more. Under Fennell, Killing Eve had nine nominations, compared to Waller-Bridge’s two.
Waller-Bridge is still on the production team for Killing Eve, and had a few nominations for the show this year in that role. Now, for Fleabag, Waller-Bridge is a winner.
Waller-Bridge seems to have taken off overnight, and there’s not a lot we know about her. Fleabag focuses on her escapades as a single woman. She’s looking for love, and the search is usually hilarious and awkward. Does Waller-Bridge have the same bad luck in her own love life?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was married
In 2017, Waller-Bridge got divorced from her then-husband Connor Woodman. The two had been together since 2012. Apparently they met after Woodman saw Waller-Bridge in a play.
Woodman is a documentary filmmaker. It totally makes sense that this smart comedian would be with a documentarian. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for the two.
We’re not sure why, since Waller-Bridge is very quiet about her personal life. We do know that they were separated for a while before the divorce, so it doesn’t seem like their marriage lasted very long.
Will we have a new power couple?
Again, Waller-Bridge doesn’t let on about her love life. While we respect that, we can’t help but notice she was at the Golden Globes with writer and director Martin McDonagh. His film, Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri was a sleeper hit a lot like Fleabag. It seems McDonagh and Waller-Bridge shared a kiss when McDonagh’s film won an award.
Waller-Bridge was also at a screening of the film, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2018.
Given that both of these artists have given us excellent work in the past few years, they’d make a great pair. If they really are together, then they could be one of film’s next power couples.
Fans may wonder if the awkward dating moments in Fleabag are based on Waller-Bridge’s real life. While it’s possible, we don’t think so. Waller-Bridge has said she writes what she wants to see, not necessarily what she’s lived through.
“I write from the point of view of what I’d like to watch. I’m always satisfying my own appetite. So I guess that means transgressive women, friendships, pain. I love pain.”
She has an amazing friend
We can only speculate about Waller-Bridge’s romantic life. She keeps things under wraps on that front. But we do know one relationship that’s working for her, and that’s her friendship with co-creator Vicky Jones.
Waller-Bridge credits Jones with encouraging her to write Fleabag. Without Jones, we would have no Fleabag, and that would be awful.
Jones and Waller-Bridge have been working together for a long time. The two have collaborated a lot in the past. They even started their own theater company in 2007. Waller-Bridge says that with Jones by her side, everything just makes sense.
We don’t know if Waller-Bridge and McDonagh are still together, or if they ever were. But we do know that Jones and Waller-Bridge are still creating shows together, which is more than we could ever ask for.
Hopefully Waller-Bridge finds love, but whatever happens, we hope she and Jones are together forever.
