Is Gretchen Rossi From ‘RHOC’ Really Pregnant?

Christmas came early for Gretchen Rossi from The Real Housewives of Orange County and boyfriend Slade Smiley. Rossi recently announced that yes, she is indeed pregnant. The road to pregnancy hasn’t been easy Rossi explains on Instagram. Plus the couple faced a number of other hurdles in their relationship, often discussed when Rossi was on RHOC.

And while Rossi and Smiley are finally starting their family, they tell People about the hurdles and pain they experienced along the way. Their baby is due in July 2019.

This is how long it took to conceive

Although Rossi talked about having a baby for some time, she revealed it took quite a few years before she could announce she was truly pregnant. “It’s honestly so surreal still,” she told People. “When you go through a journey like we’ve been through for the last four years together, it’s one of those things where you keep pinching yourself and you keep wondering, is this real?”

Plus, age may have been a factor. Rossi and Smiley will be older parents. As Rossi is 41 and Smiley is 50.

And getting pregnant was a challenge

The couple started dating 10 years ago but seriously started trying to have a family five years into the relationship. Unfortunately, Smiley who was already a father had a vasectomy. So Rossi knew she had to explore in vitro fertilization (IVF) as her best option.

“We knew that we had to go through IVF in order to get pregnant,” she said to People. “We went through a round of IVF and in that round we had 14 embryos that came out of that.”

But heartbreak followed

Like for many couples, Rossi and Smiley weren’t able to conceive immediately through IVF. Approximately six hours before the embryo transfer, the doctor called and told Rossi they all died. “We were just beyond devastated. I couldn’t even get out of bed because you just go from such a high thinking within the next 24 hours you were going to be pregnant to losing everything and losing 14 embryos. That was really, really hard for me and Slade to come out of that,” Rossi said.

“I was in a deep depression after that. I’ve never really suffered through that or been in that circumstance before. We all get sad at times, but I really went into a depression and I couldn’t even think about or talk about IVF or trying to get pregnant again because physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually, it just breaks you,” she explains. “And so it took a good year and a half for me to even be able to talk about it again.”

The couple tried again with this big change

Smiley agreed to have his vasectomy reversed. “It’s a very tricky surgery when they do a [vasectomy] reversal,” he said to People. “The little tubes that they’re reconnecting are smaller than the tip of a pen, and if for some reason you scar when it heals, it completely closes off the tubes again and it defeats the whole purpose of the re-connection. It is very challenging for them to be able to go in and actually find success in the reversals.”

And even though Smiley had the vasectomy reversed the couple continued with IVF. Rossi shared the reversal didn’t work so IVF was her only hope.

For 18 months the couple continued on their bumpy road to baby. They switched doctors and IVF clinics. And ultimately, Rossi discovered she was pregnant in November. “It’s a lot and so for us to be able to survive and get through that together, I’m very proud of that and so happy that we were able to do that,” she said to People. “I feel like we’re 100 times closer because of this journey.”

Rossi posted the wonderful news on her Instagram in December. “YES the News is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!👶🏻We are beyond ecstatic to finally announce that we are expecting a little bundle of joy!!!!!!”

Now, 10 weeks into the pregnancy, the couple shares that she wants to find out the baby’s gender. “Obviously we’d love to find out,” Smiley told People. “We’ve also got family members who are prepping gender-reveal events and parties, so we’ve agreed to not take that joy from them and we’re excited to see what they put together.

Plus, “There’s been enough surprises in this whole journey! I am a type-A personality where I like to plan and I definitely want to have a nursery done and ready to go,” Rossi adds. “I’m just one of those people, so I feel like I’d much rather know in advance and be able to prep for all of that.”
