Is ‘Hawaii Five-0’ Canceled or Renewed for Season 10?

Hawaii Five-0 fans still don’t know the fate of their favorite Friday night cop show. CBS has yet to make a statement about the future of the popular reboot of the 1970s show, which follows the adventures of an elite task force who take down criminals in Hawaii. It stars Alex O’Loughlin as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Detective Danny “Danno” Williams.

Fans had been waiting for months to find out whether Hawaii Five-0 is canceled or renewed. While the show, which has been on the air since 2010, is generally considered a shoo-in for renewal, the network has yet to make a Season 10 pickup official.

CBS has already renewed fan-favorite shows like Blue Bloods, FBI, Magnum P.I, NCIS (and its spinoffs NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans), Criminal Minds (for a 15th and final season), and Elementary (also for its last season). However, the future of Madam Secretary, MacGyver, and SEAL Team, in addition to Hawaii Five-0, are all up in the air.

Last year, news of a Hawaii Five-0 renewal didn’t come until late April, so hopefully fans will learn soon whether it will be back in the fall.

How are ratings for the show?

Ratings for Hawaii Five-0 and CBS’s other Friday night dramas are generally strong. More than 6.8 million people tuned in to watch the show’s April 13 episode, making it the most-watched broadcast show in its timeslot. While it’s not quite as big of a hit as Blue Bloods, which follows it at 10 p.m., or the long-running NCIS, there are still plenty of people watching Hawaii Five-0.

Will Alex O’Loughlin quit Hawaii Five-0?

It’s hard to imagine Hawaii Five-0 without Steve McGarrett, but not so long ago Alex O’Loughlin was prepared to walk away from the show. He said playing the role was simply too much physically, and that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

After describing a litany of injuries to TVLine in 2016, including bulging discs and damaged shoulders, he explained why he was considering leaving: “The whole show has been extremely physically daunting. That’s one of the things I’m trying to figure out at the moment now; I don’t know how much longer I can do it.”

Though O’Loughlin had said that he planned to leave the show after Season 8, he eventually changed his tune, signing on for Season 9, which is currently airing. He told AOL in 2018 that a stem cell treatment helped address a troubling back injury, which made him more open to continuing in the role.

O’Loughlin hasn’t shared his thoughts on a potential Season 10. However, he did step behind the camera for a recent episode of the show. It’s the second episode of the series he’s directed.

In a recent interview with Parade, O’Loughlin’s Hawaii Five-0 co-star Michelle Borth said it was up to him how long the show would continue, and that at the moment he was on board.

“I’ll say this much, the show will go on as long as Alex wants to do it, and Alex wants to do it,” she said.
