Is ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ Canceled Or Renewed for Season 6?
Shonda Rhimes is the queen when it comes to creating cult-like followings. She’s the mastermind behind several top-notch shows, all of which call ABC home. First, there was Grey’s Anatomy, then Scandal, followed by How to Get Away With Murder. Last year she topped things off with For the People and Station 19, before taking her genius to the streaming giant, Netflix.
Note, these are only her most popular shows! She has a handful of other gems that have surprisingly managed to fly under the radar.
How to Get Away with Murder was Rhimes’ baby in 2014. It’s been going strong ever since and now that it’s successfully wrapped up five seasons, Shondaland fans are wondering if the top-notch producer will be bringing it back (at least) one more time!
What’s ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ about?
So what makes this ABC show so good that it’s captivated audiences for the last five years? The series features Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, a brilliant and sexy professor that calls a career in defense law home. At uni, she teaches an aptly named course, How to Get Away With Murder. As if teaching wasn’t enough, Keating is also an active criminal defense attorney.
Instead of taking on her cases by herself, she invites her top-of-the-class students to work with her at her firm. The show serves mystery after mystery with just enough room for the audience to try to solve things themselves before letting it all out in the open. It’s a fantastic show shrouded in a dark grittiness that makes every episode unforgettable.
What do fans think of the show?
The show sounds perfect on paper, but what do critics think about How to Get Away with Murder? Amazingly enough, they rate the show higher than the fans with an average score of 93% compared to 85%.
What’s even more impressive is that the ratings have steadily gone up over the years. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series was only worth an 85% Tomatometer rating in its early days. It’s snatched a 100% rating for not just season five, but season four as well!
“Developing a stronger narrative this season, How to Get Away with Murder throws more improbable shocks and higher stakes into the mix, adding preposterous fuel to an addictive fire.” – Critic Consensus / Rotten Tomatoes (Season 2)
When it comes to the audience score, it’s been a bit of a roller coaster with season five taking home the best rank at 95%.
‘How to Get Away With Murder’ was renewed for another season
With season five receiving a standing ovation it’s no surprise that the show is being brought back for a sixth season. It wasn’t just the die-hard fans over at Rotten Tomatoes complimenting the season either. Viewership was sky high. The series took the No. 1 spot during the 10 p.m. slot for adults 18-34 and women 18-34.
With the critics celebrating and the numbers backing their opinions, a cancelation would have been crazy!
The show has long been praised for its inclusivity as it features an insanely diverse cast with various races, sexual orientations, and all kinds of backgrounds. This really makes it a show for the ages. That paired with Rhimes bomb storytelling explains why the show has been the recipient of tons of awards and accolades over the years. In fact, this show is the reason Davis is going down as the first woman of color to win an Emmy in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
How to Get Away with Murder wasn’t the only Shondaland series to be blessed by the network either. Grey’s Anatomy is coming back for two seasons and Station 19 will be seeing its third season very soon.
What will the sixth season of ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ focus on?
The season five finale leaves fans with a series of cliffhangers surrounding the fate of several fan-favorite characters. Laurel along with baby Christopher have vanished, while Emmett has been poisoned.
Season 6 will definitely look into the status of Laurel and Chris while the mystery surrounding Emmett is unraveled for all to see.
