Trebek made the announcement prior to the game show airing on March 6, 2019, and said he wanted viewers to hear the news directly from him.
Following his revelation, many took to Twitter to send messages of encouragement to the beloved host and they also had some questions about his family. Here’s how those who know Trebek reacted after hearing the news plus the answer to if he is currently married and how many children he has.
Who is Trebek married to?
Trebek married his first wife, a businesswoman named Elaine Callei in 1974 but their marriage didn’t last and they divorced in 1981. They did not have any children together.
Several years later, Trebek met Jean Currivan. They began dating and tied the knot in 1990.
The Canadian-born Trebek recently spoke about wishing that he had met
Currivan earlier in life.
“My wife Jean and I have been together almost 29 years, and I was thinking about President Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years. I thought, ‘oh my gosh … if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together,’” he told People.
How many children does he have?
Trebek and Currivan have two children together.
Their son, Matthew was born in 1990 and graduated from Fordham University in 2013. Today, he is the co-owner of the popular Manhattan restaurant Oso.
“There was just something about the hospitality industry that I fell in love with,” Matthew said via the Fordham News. “It’s great because it’s very free form in that it allows you to venture out into so many different fields: design, food, drinks, music, graphic design, and even just talking to people.”
The couple also has a daughter named Emily. She was born in 1993 and is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. These days, Emily works in real estate.
“I have always been interested in homes. When I was little, I wanted to be an architect,” she explained. “After graduating, I decided to get into real estate. As I was getting ready to flip my first house, I told my dad that I wanted to do it with him … I don’t have words to express how much it means to me that he helped. Just telling him how much I appreciate it and how much I thank him for guiding me through this and helping me sounds so insignificant. I don’t have the words to make it sound as significant as I feel.”
Those who know Trebek react to his diagnosis
After Trebek’s announcement one of the first people to react to the news was fellow game show host, Pat Sajek.
“The Sajak family is deeply saddened to hear of Alex Trebek’s struggle with cancer,” the Wheel of Fortune host tweeted. “Our hearts go out to him and his family. But there is no one I know who is stronger and more determined, and I would never bet against him. We, and the entire country, are pulling for you, Alex.”
Dr. Oz also took to social media to express his sadness over the news and called Trebek one of his “all-time favorite people.”
And, one of Jeopardy! most well-known contestants, Ken Jennings, tweeted that he hopes Trebek knows everyone is rooting for him before joking that “some very good L.A. oncologists are getting ready to have their mispronunciations corrected.”
