Julian Lennon, John’s son from his first marriage to Cynthia Lennon, has so much of his father’s physical traits. Even his singing voice is very much like the late Lennon’s. Growing up the son of a Beatle can’t have been easy by any means. The constant comparisons and expectations alone are discouraging and stressful, especially for someone growing up in the public eye.
Here’s what we know about Julian’s relationship status, and how his famous father and devoted mother made him who he is today.
Julian’s relationship with his father John Lennon
One can’t forget that it was Julian for whom Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude. The blockbuster hit was recorded shortly after John divorced Julian’s mother, Cynthia. McCartney wanted to reassure young Julian that, although his dad would not be in his life as much, he could always ‘make it better.’
“I have to say that, from my point of view, I felt he was a hypocrite,” Julian said of his father to the London Telegraph in 1998. “Dad could talk about peace and love out loud to the world but he could never show it to the people who supposedly meant the most to him: his wife and son. How can you talk about peace and love and have a family in bits and pieces–no communication, adultery, divorce?”
John spoke of his two sons in his final interview with Playboy magazine. The interview took place two months before his shooting death in front of The Dakota building in New York City, where he lived with his wife, Yoko Ono and five-year-old son, Sean.
“I’m not going to lie to Julian,” John told Playboy magazine in 1980. “Ninety percent of the people on this planet, especially in the West, were born out of a bottle of whiskey on a Saturday night, and there was no intent to have children. So 90 percent of us… that includes everybody… were accidents. Julian is in the majority, along with me and everybody else. Sean is a planned child, and therein lies the difference. I don’t love Julian any less as a child.”
Julian and his mother, Cynthia
Cynthia Lennon, who died in 2015 of lung cancer, was John’s first wife. She opened up to NPR’s Terry Gross in 1985 about her tumultuous marriage to John.
“We saw very little of him,” Cynthia said. “And when he did come home, he was so exhausted and so tired and so overwhelmed by the pressures of the outside world that … all he wanted to do was to collapse.”
She remained dedicated to raising Julian and fighting, mostly unsuccessfully, for her son’s share of her ex-husband’s estate.
At her passing, Yoko Ono stated, “I’m very saddened by Cynthia’s death. She was a great person and a wonderful mother to Julian. She had such a strong zest for life and I felt proud how we two women stood firm in the Beatles family.”
Has Julian married yet?
Julian has been in various relationships throughout the years. He was engaged briefly in 1980 and has dated women including Tori Spelling, Olivia d’Abo, and Stephanie La Motta.
At the moment, however, the promising photographer has not settled down with any one person.
He has expressed in the past that his rocky relationship with his famous father has encouraged him to remain single. It’s a tough lesson he learned from observing his father, that he would rather be mature enough to handle a long-term relationship and children.
“He was young and didn’t know what the hell he was doing,” The Telegraph noted Julian as saying in 2011. “That’s the reason I haven’t had children yet. I didn’t want to do the same thing. No, I’m not ready. I want to know who I am first.”
