Is Kanye West Getting Ready to Start a Church?

Kanye West’s Sunday Services, which he started earlier this year, have been the talk of the town. From their list of celebrity guests to the odd things that West and his wife Kim Kardashian have been seen doing, the Sunday Services sure has garnered a lot of attention from everyone.

Many people have speculated on what exactly Kanye West’s end goals for his Sunday Services are and a lot of followers seem to think that he is planning on starting his own church. But is that really true? Is Kanye getting ready to start his own religion? Here’s what we know.

Anyone who has been following West’s career for a while will know that the rapper is not shy about sharing his Christian faith with others. He has incorporated messages from his religion into some songs such as Jesus Walks and Ultralight Beam.

However, West’s path to embracing spirituality fully has not been easy. It was said that he used to reject Christianity growing up, though as an adult he came to find solace in religion and has been putting the gospel out into the world ever since.

“I’m like a vessel, and God has chosen me to be the voice and the connector,” he once told in an interview.

Kanye West’s recent Coachella Sunday Service

At the 2019 Coachella Music Festival, West took a break from his regular Sunday Services to put up an even bigger gospel performance on Easter Sunday.

Reportedly, West did not want to perform at Coachella in the beginning, but because the festival’s organizers agreed to give him a large stage on a man-made mountain that was reserved just for him (and on a day that was meaningful to Christianity, no less), West could not refuse the offer.

West’s gospel concert drew in more than 50,000 people. Among those watching friends and family members such as Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, and 2 Chainz. The performance was also streamed live on Youtube.

Is Kanye West planning to start a church?

The popularity of West’s Coachella concert is perhaps a sign that not only are many people are interested in attending church services run by the rapper himself but that West could actually sustain a career in this line of work. According to a source close to West, he has actually toyed around with the idea of starting a church before.

“He has talked about starting his own church, and what exactly that would be,” the source shared. “It wouldn’t be the traditional, 3-hymns-and-a-sermon thing. Instead, it would be a way to point people to Jesus through the arts and through a community of people who love and care for each other. He also wants his kids to be raised in faith, and the best way for him to do that is to live out his faith.”

It should be noted that the Kardashian family has started their own church before. Called the Life Change Community Church, it was founded by Kris Jenner and reportedly frequented by some members of her family. However, in recent years, the church has come under fire for possibly being a tax haven more so than a legitimate place of worship.

It does not seem like Kanye West will start a church to get a tax break. The source close to West said that he “really does want to help people,” especially through gospel music.

The source continued: “Kanye has always said that his vision has always been for people from different backgrounds — races, ethnicities, beliefs, politics — to come together to worship God and love other people.”
