Is Keanu Reeves Going to Play Wolverine?

Keanu Reeves has previously revealed he wants to play Wolverine. Well, at least that’s a better idea than Danny DeVito playing Wolverine.

Reeves’ popularity has surged of late, not only because of John Wick: Chapter 3, but because of his voice work in Toy Story 4 and his appearance as himself in Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe. It’s Keanu’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

That said, don’t get your hopes up about Wolverine. If anything happens with that character, it won’t be for awhile, and by that time we may have to file that one under “fun pipe dream.”

Keanu Reeves grows claws?

ScreenGeek spoke to Reeves when he was promoting his film Replicas earlier this year, and it was mentioned that he’d been interested in both Batman and Wolverine, but Reeves said the roles were cast and he missed his shot. This amusing exchange occurred with his Replicas: co-star.

Alice Eve: We have John Wick though! What can he do; he can’t be a cheater! You can’t cheat on John!

Keanu Reeves: Of the two, I’d love to play Wolverine.

When I pressed further on any other comic book role he would like to take on, he said:

Keanu Reeves: I don’t have one, to be candid.

Reeves reiterated the same thing in a Reddit AMA, prompting one fan to ask “Any chance we could get a high-profile Canadian celebrity such as yourself to back the proposal for a statue of Wolverine in Edmonton?

So apparently it’s Wolverine or nothing.

Will Reeves join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a different character?

Adding fuel to the fire is that fact that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has said he has pursued Reeves, although he did not specify which role he had wanted Reeves to do.

“We talk to him for almost every film we make,” Feige told “We talk to Keanu Reeves about. I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”

One of the roles Reeves was up for was Doctor Strange, which would have reunited him with his The Day the Earth Stood Still director Scott Derrickson. Other contenders included Joaquin Phoenix, Colin Farrell, and of course, Benedict Cumberbatch.

So the MCU door is definitely open,  but will Reeves come in? He may, but not in the way people would expect.

No X-Men in the MCU for now

The role Reeves wants most is probably out of his hands. Hugh Jackman definitively said goodbye to the role in Logan, and Dark Phoenix was the first non-Deadpool X-Men universe movie not to feature Wolverine in any capacity.

Unfortunately, Dark Phoenix had a difficult production to say the least, and it belly-flopped in theaters. If there had been any anticipation for the return of Wolverine, Dark Phoenix may have killed it.

Granted, if Marvel were to announce that Reeves were playing Wolverine, people would go. However, Feige has also said he is not in any hurry to bring the X-Men over to his yard.

He told io9:

“It’ll be awhile. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”

Feige said that Jake Gyllenhaal had also been on Marvel’s wish list, but the opportunities kept slipping through their fingers – until one day they didn’t, and they landed the actor for Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Perhaps one day the stars will align and Keanu won’t always be Marvel’s maybe. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, anyone?
