Is ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Coming to Disney+? Fans React to Rumor

When it comes to Disney+, there are frequent rumors about new shows. The Disney universe is vast and riddled with crossovers, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity for new ventures. However, the latest Disney+ rumor is raising some eyebrows — it looks like there may be a Kingdom Hearts television show in the works. For those not familiar, Kingdom Hearts is a video game series featuring some of Disney’s most famous faces battling a dark force alongside heroes from the Final Fantasy franchise. But is it really going to appear on television?

New rumors suggest ‘Kingdom Hearts’ is on its way to Disney+

Recent Tweets have suggested that Disney+ may soon be adding a Kingdom Hearts related offering to their streaming service.

Emra Kaya, of The Cinema Spot, recently tweeted the news. Kaya wrote on Twitter, “I was originally going to publish this as an exclusive article, but apparently a few other insiders have heard about it too so I’m just going to tweet it out I think. There is a [Kingdom Hearts] series in the works at Disney+. Disney originally wanted to make it but that didn’t work out, so Square Enix was asked to create a pilot using Unreal Engine. This series is most likely not live-action, but CG animated. They’re currently casting.”

MCU Cosmic writer Jeremy Conrad appeared to back up the information, alongside DisInsider contributor Skyler Shuler. Conrad simply tweeted, “Yes, it’s true.”

Shuler referenced Conrad’s tweet, adding that it is true as well. While that makes several reporters corroborating the rumor, Disney+ has yet to make an official announcement on the matter.

What might the show look like?

As Kingdom Hearts fans are aware, the franchise is a wonderful mishmash, if nothing else. The series features well-known characters from a wide swathe of Disney movies.

These characters battle alongside Sora, a boy who is chosen to wield the keyblade, and tasked by Mickey Mouse to help save various worlds from an encroaching darkness. Sora also meets a wide variety of other character, drawn from the Final Fantasy series by Square Enix.

It’s unclear whether or not the Square Enix characters would appear on a televised version of the series. However, Shuler  confirmed in his tweet that the show will be animated using CG.

Additionally, it seems as though Disney voice over actors have been tapped to voice the roles of their Disney universe characters. For the time being, that’s all of the information available about how the show might be presented — but again, all of this information has yet to be confirmed by Disney itself.

Fans react, not all are so sure

Kingdom Hearts has a bit of a reputation for taking a long time to deliver on grand promises within its own franchise. This may have some fans wondering whether or not the show will ever actually exist, or if it will even make any sense within the universe.

Some are wondering if the show will be a retelling, while others are speculating that it could be a continuation.

One Redditor expressed concern over the show. They suggested they may be hoping it’s not true, writing, “But that’s partially because I hope it’s not true. Unless it was a faithful adaption — and animated — so we just had HQ cutscene level animation of the entire series, I don’t want it. Not live action. Not non-canon side plots. Not cheap animation.”

“I mean personally I’d love to see this done as a 2d animated series reminiscent of an anime or [Avatar: The Last Airbender], but I’m definitely not opposed to a CG show,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Not sure how I feel about this, but I feel a bit better that it’s not live action and square is seemingly behind it. not to mention that lately, animated shows on Disney have been pretty good lately,” added another Twitter user.
