Is ‘Marriage Story’ Playing in a Theater Near You? Find Out Here

Netflix may have missed out on Best Picture at last year’s Academy Awards. But the streaming service is back with a vengeance — and no less than four major awards contenders — this year. Among the Netflix films gaining momentum as awards season heats up is Marriage Story.

Writer/director Noah Baumbach’s new film may be a Netflix original film. But it is still currently playing in select theaters. Let’s look into where Marriage Story is playing and when you might be able to see it.

What is ‘Marriage Story’ about?

In Marriage Story, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson star as Charlie and Nicole Barber, a married couple whose personal life is shattered by a bitter divorce. The film is partly inspired by Baumbach’s own separation from ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh. And the film is just as intense as fans might expect.

In fact, Marriage Story‘s raw storytelling and earnest performances have made the film one of the best-reviewed releases of the year. Fans of both stars have plenty to look forward to, as Marriage Story is a showcase for their versatile talents.

Netflix’s release strategy

Following a successful festival run, Marriage Story only recently hit select theaters. During this initial release, the film arrived in just a handful of locations in New York and Los Angeles. However, Marriage Story is expanding over the next couple of weeks.

Many of the first screenings have included filmmaker Q&As, highlighting the purpose of what is essentially an Oscar-qualifying run. Netflix’s main goal has been to increase awareness of the film among awards voters and general audiences alike. So, unfortunately, most moviegoers will have to check their local listings to see if Marriage Story will make it to their towns.

If fans don’t get the chance to see Marriage Story on the big screen, at least they can watch it at home before long. Baumbach’s film will reach a much broader audience when it debuts on Netflix on December 6. In a way, this quiet, intimate setting may even be a better way to take in a film with such a deep, personal story to tell.

Is Adam Driver going to win an Oscar?

Both Driver and Johansson are having extremely busy years. Johansson, of course, stars in Avengers: Endgame and in another awards-friendly film, Jojo Rabbit. Meanwhile, Driver appeared in The Report and The Dead Don’t Die. Plus, he will head back to a “galaxy far, far away” in December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The two Marriage Story stars are earning Oscar buzz for their roles in Baumbach’s film, as is co-star Laura Dern. However, Johansson may have a better chance in Best Supporting Actress for her work in Jojo Rabbit. If Marriage Story has a chance at an acting Oscar, it’s Driver.

Many pundits are claiming the actor is a lock for a Best Actor nomination. And, since he was nominated just this year for BlacKkKlansman, it does feel like Driver has quickly become an Academy favorite. Time will tell, however, if he, Joker‘s Joaquin Phoenix, or another star walks away with Oscar in February.
