Is Meghan Markle to Blame? Prince Harry Said He Wanted to Leave the Royal Family Long Before Marrying Her
For anyone blaming Meghan Markle after she and Prince Harry announced they are leaving their royal duties, it’s interesting to note that Harry considered leaving the royal family long before he met and married Markle.
Prince Harry and Markle made a huge announcement
It came as a shock to many when the Sussexes, upon returning from a six-week break, revealed their upcoming plans with the royal family. Prince Harry and Markle shared the details in an Instagram post, noting they would “step back as senior members of the Royal Family.”
They explained, in part: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
Markle has been blamed for the decision
The couple are a united force, but that hasn’t stopped many critics from pointing the blame at Markle, believing she’s behind it all. One of her biggest critics, Piers Morgan, slammed the duchess in a scathing article for the Daily Mail.
He noted in the unkind piece, in part, that Markle is a “scheming, selfish D-list actress wife. To put it bluntly, she’s an unsavoury manipulative social-climbing piece of work who has inveigled her way into Prince Harry’s heart and used his blind love as a platform to now destroy everything he once held so dear.”
The Good Morning Britain presenter tweeted after the announcement: “’People say I’m too critical of Meghan Markle — but she ditched her family, ditched her Dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & has now split him from the Royal Family. I rest my case.”
Prince Harry contemplated leaving the royal family before
It turns out Prince Harry had shared his thoughts on leaving the royal family long before Markle was in his life.
In a June 2017 interview with the Mail on Sunday, Prince Harry shared that he had considered giving up his royal title after his time in the army ended in 2015. He admitted: “I felt I wanted out but then decided to stay in and work out a role for myself.”
He continued: “We don’t want to be just a bunch of celebrities, but instead use our role for good.”
He found his time in the service the “best escape I’ve ever had,” adding, “I felt as though I was really achieving something [in the army]. I have a deep understanding of all sorts of people from different backgrounds and felt I was part of a team. I wasn’t a Prince, I was just Harry.”
In an interview with Newsweek magazine that same year, he again shared that he wanted something more than royal life could offer, saying he wanted to be “something other than Prince Harry” and to “make something of my life.”
He explained: “I feel there is just a smallish window when people are interested in me before [William’s children] take over, and I’ve got to make the most of it.”
