Is Meghan Markle Copying Queen Elizabeth’s Fashion Style?

When a member of the British royal family steps out, the entire world stops to see what they are going to wear. The royal family has set trends for decades, and have plenty of rules in place to make sure they look just so. The one member of the royal family that everyone has been fixated on fashion-wise most recently? Meghan Markle.

While Meghan Markle may show some of her American acting routes in her wardrobe, many have noticed that she and Queen Elizabeth appear to have some of the style preferences. But is Meghan Markle copying Queen Elizabeth’s fashion style?

Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle share some style preferences

Taking a look at the many outfits Meghan Markle has been spotted in for royal events, it is obvious that she is not copying Queen Elizabeth’s fashion style. The two do, however, share a number of style preferences that could make it appear that way to outsiders.

Both Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle prefer solid colored fabrics and avoid prints. They also both prefer a simple silhouette. Generally speaking, Queen Elizabeth prefers her colors to be brighter than Meghan Markle does, although the Duchess of Sussex has certainly donned any number of vivid coloring schemes – perhaps as a nod to her grandmother-in-law.

Both women understand the power of clothing

Another thing that Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth share is an understanding about the power of clothing. In an interview with People, Stephen Jones (Meghan’s favorite milliner) states that “Almost like the Queen, she understands that in a way, what’s best is simplicity. There is a restraint and elegance to her, which is wonderful… There’s also an understanding about the power of clothing — she is an actress and she knows the meaning behind all of those clothes.”

Queen Elizabeth has long been known to choose her outfits for very specific reasons. For example, the reason she always dresses in such bright color schemes when attending royal events is so that she can be picked out among the crowd. Meghan Markle, too, has been making statements with her clothing choices.

Meghan Markle sends messages with her clothing

For Meghan Markle, getting dressed goes beyond simply throwing something on. For her, each piece of clothing she wears sends a message to the people at large. Her favorite message is to show support for causes near to her heart.

For example, Markle’s clothing is often from companies who use cruelty-free processes, which is in support of ending animal cruelty. Meghan Markle also wears clothing that is entirely vegan. At one event, Markle donned a purse from a company who donates a portion of their proceeds to help prevent child mortality.

Not all of the messages Meghan Markle appears to send are so important to the world – sometimes they are personal messages. An example is how Markle was spotted wearing a shirt which said “Husband” on it, just shortly before she and Harry announced their engagement. Just before the newlywed couple announced they were expecting, Markle was spotted wearing a dress named ‘Blessed.’

Her jewelry also sends messages

It isn’t only the Duchess of Sussex’s clothing choices which send messages, but also her accessories. Markle favors sustainable jewelry bands with ethical gem-sourcing methods, as everyone knows the newest royal is a strong advocate for the environment. A few times she has given a subtle nod to her husband’s mother, Princess Diana.

Perhaps the cutest thing Meghan Markle has done with her jewelry is connect with her fans. She did this by proudly wearing a macaroni necklace that was made and gifted her by a six-year-old fan – and the world still can’t stop talking about how sweet that is.
