Is Meghan Markle Destined To Have a Similar Relationship With Queen Elizabeth as Princess Diana?

There’s something striking about Meghan Markle. Something in the way she holds herself, the beliefs she has, and the causes that she supports that remind us of a different time. Meghan, in many ways, has a presence similar to her husband’s mother, the late Princess Diana.

Diana, who was known for her charity work, was celebrated as an incredible humanitarian and person. But Diana did not always get along with the queen, her former mother-in-law, in large part because of her beliefs and the way she challenged royal traditions.

With similar convictions, is Meghan destined to have a tense relationship with the queen, much like Diana?

One of the things that made Diana so special to the people was her humanitarian work. She was an advocate for the people and she never shied from doing what she felt was right.

During her life, the princess fought for people who suffered from AIDS. She was not scared, and she was not judgmental. Rather, she embraced people who were in need of love and compassion.

Meghan shares similar drives and passions. Long before she became a member of the royal family, she was an advocate for both human and animal rights. She is a strong feminist and spends a lot of her time working with children.

In an interview with BBC, Meghan said that a shared interest in humanitarianism is one of the things that connected her and Harry. “It was one of the first things we started talking about when we met was just the different things we wanted to do in the world and how passionate we were about seeing change,” she said.

Queen Elizabeth once considered Princess Diana a ‘misfit’

While it’s hard for the public to view Diana as anything but “the people’s princess,” it’s easy to understand why Queen Elizabeth once considered Diana to be a misfit: She quite simply didn’t fit in. Unlike other royals, she was outspoken, she was emotional, and she was honest. She didn’t do what she was told, but rather what she felt was right.

Though Meghan does not speak out against the royal family, it is obvious that she and Harry intend to live their lives the way that they see fit. The couple has moved to Frogmore Cottage, away from where most of the family resides and has separated their charity from the one they formerly shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Is Meghan Markle destined to have the same relationship Princess Diana did with the queen?

Given the similarities between Diana and Meghan, it’s natural to assume that the queen might have a difficult time connecting with the duchess as she did with Diana. We have already seen that Meghan’s decision to raise her child vegan was not exactly in line with the queen’s expectations.

Queen Elizabeth was reportedly never able to get close to Diana, whose rebellion and disinterest in being a princess are said to be to blame. The queen was criticized for failing to lower the palace flag promptly and not returning from vacation immediately following Diana’s death in 1997.

Will Meghan struggle to build a connection with the queen? Will her desire to do things her way cause conflict? That is yet to be seen. Over time, the queen has come to realize that Diana ultimately changed the family for the better. The work she did for AIDS patients, coupled with the attention she brought to the cause, was instrumental in making progress with the disease.

Reflecting on what Diana brought to the family, the queen surely recognizes what Meghan brings to the family. Though she may not agree with some of her choices or beliefs, the duchess brings a new perspective and a refreshing change to the family. We have to imagine the queen would want to facilitate an open relationship with her grandson’s new bride.
