Is Meghan Markle More Celebrity or Royalty?

Meghan Markle has been blurring the line between being a celebrity and a royal family member ever since she married Prince Harry in 2018. While both celebrities and royals are famous, there are a few big differences between them that Meghan will have to pay attention to.

In any case, with the way the Duchess of Sussex has been carrying herself, is she more of a celebrity or a royal? Let’s look in details at what we know.

Before Meghan Markle was introduced to the world as Prince Harry’s girlfriend, she was merely a face many people had seen on TV. She had brief appearances on shows such as Deal or No Deal90210Without a Trace, and Castle.

From 2011, she had a big role on Suits as Rachel Zane, a paralegal-turned-attorney. This naturally gave her a huge boost in popularity and allowed her to join the ranks of celebrities in Hollywood.

Meghan Markle has been taking her royal role very seriously

When Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she had to give up acting and focus more on doing work that royals must do, such as sponsoring charity organizations and promoting important causes.

The new Duchess of Sussex has been excelling at her new role. The discipline required to sustain an acting career has helped Meghan Markle’s carve out very impressive work ethics as a royal and she has been taking on more duties than expected. Even Queen Elizabeth has nothing but praises for Meghan, who seems to fit in well with the royal family.

Is Meghan Markle more celebrity or royalty?

According to royal historian Anna Whitelock, someone who is a popular royal like Meghan Markle (and also her husband Prince Harry) should be careful as to not become a celebrity.

“I think the line that [Meghan and Harry] are walking and are going to have to walk very carefully, is between royalty and celebrity,” Whitelock said. “They may end up diverting too far away from the royal brand and become celebrities in their own right… If you’re a royal you can generate lots and lots of interest and lots of appeal, but ultimately it’s got to be for the firm, it can’t be for any one person.”

This came into question when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry launched their Instagram account instead of continuing to be represented by the one that was also shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton. The fact that Meghan and Harry are doing things their own way can be a cause for concern if they end up becoming too independent and removed from the royal brand.

However, it’s important to remember that Meghan Markle was known as a celebrity before she became royalty and, as such, will likely remain a celebrity, especially now that she is married to one of the most famous princes in the world.

And although she is known for still trying to do some things her way within the royal family, Meghan has been doing her best to fit into the image of a good duchess and promoting the royal brand. We are sure that Prince Harry as well as other royals were aware of how fiercely independent Meghan was before she joined their ranks, so they most likely are not shocked that she is still being true to herself even while being surrounded by rules and protocols.

Moreover, perhaps crossing the line into being a bit of a celebrity can be helpful for royals these days to remain relevant with the public. With the changing media landscape, it’s important that royals also change up how they promote themselves. For example, since many young people are on social media, Meghan might have realized that she and Harry also need to create their own brand in order to be more attractive to the generation that they want to reach.
