Is Meghan Markle’s Latest Move an Effort to Protect Herself From the Royal Staff?
Meghan Markle has gotten more than her fair share of bad press. Since the moment that the world found out Markle was going to be the future Duchess of Sussex, headlines have been quick to call her out for perceived flaws and missteps. Everything from her clothing to her past life as an American celebrity to her desire to keep her son protected from the public eye has been a source of criticism. The attacks have gone so far as to suggest that her association with Prince Harry has hurt his reputation as well.
It would be understandable if the Duchess had reached a breaking point after facing so many negative comments day after day, month after month. Now, there is new evidence to suggest that may be the case. Markle has hired a Hollywood PR firm, and—while the official capacity has to do with the family’s charity foundation—some speculate she may also be using it to help repair her public image. Some see the latest move as a way to reach out to her connections and protect herself in her new world.
Not everyone is happy with the PR move
News hit that Markle had taken the step of hiring Sunshine Sachs, a PR firm with a celebrity client list that includes the Michael Jackson Estate, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Natalie Portman. Not everyone was thrilled to find out about this move. Writing for The Sun, Dan Wootton questioned whether Markle even wants to be a member of the royal family.
A senior official explained that “Meghan is creating a team that is not bogged down by the traditions and regulations of the Palace to work for her and Harry on passion projects.”
Some have seen this buffer from royal traditions as a way to distance herself from the responsibilities and duties in her role as Duchess. Rumors have even begun flying that Markle and Prince Harry are making plans to relocate to California.
Perhaps the negativity is an overreaction
While claims that the Duke and Duchess will be permanently planting themselves overseas are certain to cause a stir, the drama about the PR firm may be a great overreaction.
While reports act as if Markle has hired the firms to direct her personal life, the official capacity is to aid with the American arm of The Sussex Royal Foundation. It makes sense to hire an American PR firm to reach out to American donors, and the Prince of Wales did the same for the American portion of the Prince’s Trust.
Markle protects herself from royal staff
While some see Markle’s use of a Hollywood PR firm as a way to distance herself from life in the royal family and a plan a return to her American life, others recognize that Markle is simply trying to learn to navigate a new world.
She’s a professional who knows how the impact of media coverage can impact her work. Some believe the source of the negative press surrounding the Duchess has been coming from the staff members who surround her on a daily basis.
If that’s the case (or even if Markle just suspects that is the case), it makes sense that she would reach out to a source she could trust to advise her. Making the leap from Hollywood television star to a member of the royal family is not easy.
The scrutiny Markle has faced would make anyone leery of the people around them. She has to figure out who she can trust and who has her best interest in mind, and turning to a PR firm that is guaranteed to fight for her and her image is one way to make sure that she gets support.
