Is Michael Weatherly’s ‘Bull’ In Danger of Getting Canceled?

Bull’s novel approach to the courtroom drama has earned it a top place at CBS. Viewers love the show, and they love its star: NCIS alum Michael Weatherly. Unfortunately, Bull may soon be losing its privileged spot with the network, and Weatherly is to blame. His mistake may cause the show to be canceled. What’s in the future for Bull? Let’s take a look at the details to find out.

Bull is in dangerous territory and fans are concerned it may not last much longer. TVLine released its bubble list of shows that may be canceled and Bull was included. Although the show continues to get great ratings, Weatherly’s sexual misconduct scandal has become a PR nightmare for Bull.

Actress Eliza Dushku was awarded $9.5 million dollars from CBS after she alleged that Weatherly made inappropriate jokes and comments on the set. Dushku said Weatherly said he wanted to spank her and have a threesome in front of other members of the crew. He also called a windowless van a “rape van.”

When Dushku complained about Weatherly’s behavior, she claims he pressured producers to write her off the show as retaliation. The $9.5 million that CBS ended up paying Dushku was meant to cover her lost pay for four seasons which she would have received if she hadn’t been written off Bull.

Despite backlash from those who thought Weatherly should be fired, CBS decided to continue their relationship with the actor and keep Bull on the air, at least for now.

CBS Entertainment president, Kelly Kahl acknowledged Weatherly’s mistake in a statement about the scandal. “Michael made a mistake in his comments [to Dushku],” Kahl said. “He owned that mistake. He was apologetic at the time, and he was remorseful. He was willing to take any kind of coaching or training we deem necessary for him to create a positive environment on the set, something that has taken place.”

Kahl continued by stating that he felt Weatherly took the complaint seriously and is eager to move forward. Because of this, Kahl said he felt comfortable continuing to work with the actor and bringing Bull back for another season.

Will ‘Bull’ be canceled?

Bull is one of the top performers for CBS, and while there was a 31 percent drop in viewers after the allegations became public, the ratings have bounced back since.

However, it’s been several months since the scandal, and it continues to make headlines. It seems that CBS thought this was something that would quickly blow over, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. More people hear about it every day and are becoming outraged that the network chose to continue working with Weatherly.

Other celebrities that have been in Weatherly’s position were quickly fired, and so the public has come to expect this. For now, CBS continues to stand by Weatherly, but the longer his scandal remains in the headlines, the more likely they’ll be to change their mind.

CBS was willing to continue with Bull because it offered the network premium ratings. If that changes, or if they end up losing viewers to other shows in protest of this situation, the network likely won’t continue to support Weatherly.

Bull is on thin ice right now. If the public continues to express their outrage over the Weatherly allegations, CBS may decide it’s not worth it to keep the show around. On the other hand, if things calm down, Bull will probably be safe. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but the clock is ticking for Bull.
