Is ‘Mindhunter’ Canceled? The Netflix Show May Not Be Coming Back for Season 3, and Fans Aren’t Happy
We may have seen the last of Holden Ford and Bill Tench. The future of Mindhunter is in doubt, Deadline is reporting. Netflix has released the cast from their contracts and executive producer David Fincher is busy with other projects. That means that season 3 of the dark series about a pair of FBI agents and a psychologist who study serial killers is on hold — at least for now.
David Fincher is working on other Netflix projects
David Fincher had a big hand in creating the distinctive look and feel of Mindhunter. And he directed four episodes in season 1 and three in season 2. But now, he’s focused on other projects.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline.
Mank is a biopic about legendary Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, who wrote Citizen Kane. Love, Death, and Robots is an animated science-fiction anthology series.
Fincher didn’t want to prevent the show’s cast from pursuing other opportunities
With Fincher too busy to work on Mindhunter Season 3 right now, he felt it was only fair to let the cast, which includes Jonathan Groff as Ford, Holt McCallany as Tench, and Anna Torv as Wendy Carr, pursue other opportunities.
“He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own,” Netflix explained in a statement.
‘Mindhunter’ fans are not happy
As news about Mindhunter’s uncertain future spread, fans of the show reacted with anger and disappointment.
“Terrible news. @netflix what the hell are you thinking? Seriously!” one fan tweeted.
Some were upset that the while Mindhunter was in limbo, what they saw as inferior shows were being renewed.
“NETFLIX: Not sure #Mindhunter will be back for a 3rd season but LOOK another season of #Riverdale” complained one.
“Looks like the real killer was Netflix all along,” another tweeted.
The cast would like to return
While there are no firm plans for Mindhunter Season 3, Deadline reports that the cast would be happy to return to the show. McCallany has also tweeted several articles clarifying the show has not been canceled and thanking fans for their support.
Mindhunter Season 2 was released in August 2019, nearly two years after the premiere of season 1. While Netflix does not release viewership data for its shows, the show was well-received by both fans and critics. But the second season made less of a splash than the first. However, it has a loyal fanbase, which could affect the streaming service’s willingness to move forward with season 3, Deadline noted.
