The Outlander star has not been shy about his desire to be the next James Bond and recently admitted that he would love a shot at the iconic role — as long he could do it in a kilt. Heughan opens up about Bond role

In a recent interview, Heughan was asked what it would take for him to accept the role and replace Daniel Craig as the next Bond. According to The Scottish Sun, Heughan joked that he would only take the part if he was allowed to wear a kilt. Heughan also acknowledged that just about every actor who has worn a suit on the big screens has been mentioned in the James Bond sweepstakes.

“Is [Bond] something you’d like to sink your teeth into?” Sam Heughan shared. “If Bond would wear a kilt, I think he probably would – he does have a lot of Scottish connections.”

Heughan noted that he actually tried out for the part of Bond when they were auditioning for Bond 21. Heughan has jumped into the spotlight after starring on Outlander as Jamie Fraser.

Heughan says that he has no idea who will land the part after Craig calls it quits, though he certainly has a shot at the role. With Craig on board for the upcoming Bond, it will likely be quite some time before they cast for the new part.

Sam Heughan thinks the next Bond should be Scottish

Heughan is currently in the middle of filming Season 5 of Outlander and took time out of his busy schedule to talk about landing the role as 007. According to Carter Matt, Heughan confessed that it is time that there was another Scottish James Bond.

The last time that happened was 36 years ago when Sean Connery held the mantle, which almost matches Heughan’s age.

The Outlander star also explained how James Bond author Ian Fleming had a lot of ties to Scotland and that his character was raised in the area. While Heughan would certainly make a good choice for the part, he does have a lot of competition.

In fact, one of the frontrunners for the part is Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden, whom Heughan acknowledged is a great actor. The Scottish hunk, who is good friends with Madden, also joked that he is far too short to play Bond.

What are the chances that Heughan lands the part?

Aside from his work on Outlander, Heughan has made the transition to the big screens and recently appeared in The Spy Who Dumped Me alongside the likes of Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis. There is no telling who producers will pick as the next bond, but Heughan is certainly making a strong case for himself.

With the next Bond flick expected to be released this summer, it is only a matter of time before the casting ramps up — that is, if Craig truly does retire this time.

In the meantime, Sam Heughan has not been shy about mentioning the part on social media. In a tweet last month, the Outlander star joked with fans about landing the iconic role, though he later admitted that the move will probably land him in jail. Previous Bond actors include the likes of Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan.

“Dude!! You’re not going to believe this!!!!!!!! Just got call about BOND!!!!!!!” Heughan wrote.”

James Bond producers allegedly ask Sam Heughan to audition

Amid all the speculation about the next Bond, an inside source claims that producers called the Outlander star and asked him to audition for the part. The insider says that producers are looking to reboot the entire franchise and think a Scottish Bond is the way to go. They are hoping that somebody as popular as Heughan can fill Connery’s shoes and believe it would be a massive success.

That said, the news that Sam Heughan has already auditioned should come with a grain of salt. After all, auditions for the next Bond probably won’t happen until after Bond 25 opens in theaters, and that is considering that a reboot will happen right away. The last time we got a new bond, it took them three years to cast the part and come up with a storyline.

Production for Bond 25 is currently underway.
