Prince Harry is one of the public’s favorite members of the royal family — there is just no denying that. In addition to being handsome and charismatic, the new father also has a heart of gold. He truly connects with his fans as well as members of the public.
Ever since Prince Harry was born, the world has been interested in all aspects of his life, keeping up with his adventures as a small child, the situations he got himself into as a teen and young adult, and, in particular, his romantic relationships.
Now that Prince Harry is happily married to Meghan Markle, and the couple has welcomed their first child, he seems to be the main focus of many around the world. Although the prince is often referred to simply as “Harry”, it is important to remember that his status as a royal means that he has several titles. Upon his marriage, he became a duke. So, is Harry actually a prince or a duke, and what does it all mean?
What is the difference between a prince and a duke?
Since titles within the royal family can be somewhat confusing, let’s first take a look at the difference between a prince and a duke. It is easy to assume that all of the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth are princes and princesses. Yet, that’s not exactly the case.
A prince is born with the title. Conversely, a duke is a title that is bestowed upon a royal family member, usually at the time they marry. Not all of the queen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a royal title since not all of their parents wanted them to have one.
One of the most significant differences between a prince and a duke is that to be a prince, one must be in the royal bloodline. A dukedom, on the other hand, can be inherited. It does not require someone to be a direct descendant of the ruling monarch.
What is Prince Harry’s official title?
As it turns out, Prince Harry’s full name is actually Prince Henry Charles Albert David. In addition to this, he has the titles Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel. Now that he is officially a duke, Harry holds the highest rank below his grandmother, the queen.
Is Meghan Markle a princess?
It is easy to assume that when Meghan and Prince Harry married a little over a year ago, it meant that the former actress was now a princess. To further complicate things, baby Archie’s birth certificate says that Meghan is a “princess of the United Kingdom”. So, what does this mean?
Well, Meghan is not actually a princess, as she is a royal by marriage. As the wife of a Duke, she is known as the Duchess of Sussex. But many were left wondering about her status after she was referred to as a princess on her son’s birth certificate. The answer is quite simple: This is Meghan’s occupation, not her title.
Is Prince Harry a prince or a duke?
He is actually both. Becoming a duke on his wedding day certainly did not mean that Harry was no longer a prince. Being born to Prince Charles, who is a future king, means that Harry will forever be able to use the title of “prince.” Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel are simply additional titles that Harry was given by his grandmother.
That is quite a lot of titles for one person to have. It is definitely a lot for the rest of us to keep track of. Luckily for us, the prince is so down to earth that his friends are able to just call him Harry!
