Is Scarlett Johansson Getting Paid as Much as Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth?

The gender battle over pay equity in Hollywood continues, with the majority of male actors often being paid substantially more than their woman co-stars.

If you go by the top paid male star alone, Dwayne Johnson reportedly made $89.4 million between June 1, 2018, and June 1, 2019. The year prior, George Clooney reportedly made $239 million before taxes. For women, Scarlett Johansson topped the list two years in a row: she raked in a total of $56 million from 2018 to 2019, and $40.5 million the year prior.

The numbers speak for themselves: the pay gap blatantly exists. That said, progress is being made. Especially when you consider Johansson is in the same playing field as two top male actors. Coincidentally, the two are also fellow members of the MCU.

The world’s top ten highest-paid actresses raked in $314.6 million cumulatively, before taxes and fees, which is a 69 percent jump from the year prior. But it’s still trailing their male counterparts, who earned $588.3 million cumulatively during the same time frame. So it’s safe to say there’s quite a way to go to bridge the gender pay gap in Hollywood. Johansson’s accomplishment is significant since she leads the highest-earning actresses by bringing in $56 million.

Scarlett Johansson is matching the paycheck of Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans

We’ve all seen how close Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are in the MCU. They act almost like goofy twin brothers when on the set and during press junkets. Part of their brotherhood seemed to be in making sure they make bank while acting in all the Avengers movies.

Somehow, Johansson managed to match their paydays by making $15 million for the upcoming Black Widow. It had to take Johansson landing a solo Marvel movie to make this happen. But now she’s managed to do what few actresses have been able to do. Beating out big names like Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon on the Forbes list is a big deal and sets up new paths for other actresses to move forward.

Even more important is Johansson has already been paid equally as the two Chrises since Avengers: Age of Ultron. Maybe some will question what merits this when Johansson has said so many controversial things of late.

At the heart of it is her basic appeal, something many media outlets don’t analyze enough.

Is Scarlett Johansson really worth what she’s being paid?

One thing Johansson has going for her beyond her magnetic screen presence and box office clout is her child actor past. She’s created many indelible memories in those who grew up seeing her as a young actor in movies from North to The Horse Whisperer. The latter is already a classic, and Johansson’s performance as a relatable, young teenager placed her at the forefront.

She’s had several gilded stages of her film career, with all successful. Her first adult stage was finding her way in Oscar-caliber indie projects, followed by working for Woody Allen. His casing pushed her ever forward into one of the leading actresses of the 21st century.

Then she reinvented the female lead in innovative sci-fi fare like Her, followed by her jackpot stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Consider Marvel to be her ultimate insurance on guaranteeing large paychecks for the foreseeable future. Her recent controversial comments all come from a knowing self-confidence in making sure we all see a logical, middle ground on things without consequences.
