Tessa Thompson Says She Didn’t Actually Confirm She’s Dating Janelle Monáe
Tessa Thompson is pushing back against reports that she has confirmed her relationship with Janelle Monáe.
On Friday, Thompson came out as bisexual in an interview with Net-a-Porter, and she spoke a bit about Monáe during this lengthy discussion. It has long been speculated that Thompson and Monáe are in a relationship, though neither has ever said they are dating.
Thompson said of Monae on Friday:
“We love each other deeply. We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Several media outlets interpreted this quote as Thompson officially confirming that she and Monáe are an item. Vibe Magazine, for instance, tweeted, “As Pride Month comes to an end, Tessa Thompson confirms she and Janelle Monae are a couple.”
However, Thompson is now saying that her words are being misinterpreted. On Twitter, she clarified, “I didn’t say I was in a relationship.” She directed her tweet towards media outlets writing about her interview, saying that “sometimes we cheer so loudly at someone speaking their truth, that we miss what they say.”
Sometimes we cheer so loudly at someone speaking their truth, that we miss what they say. (Here’s looking at you media journalism). I didn’t say I was in a relationship. But I said lots of other things. All below. One thing I missed — Pride Has No End. x https://t.co/yEd0Ep6K17

In her Net-a-Porter interview, Thompson talked about wanting to maintain her privacy, explaining:
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence. I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be…I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones. But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
Although Thompson may not have made her relationship with Monáe official today, she did come out as bisexual, telling Net-a-Porter, “I’m attracted to men and also to women.”
The speculation about the nature of Thompson and Monáe’s relationship heated up earlier this year when Monáe released the music video for her song “Make Me Feel,” in which she and Thompson dance seductively. The video was also quite reminiscent of the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero,” which is about the romance between two women.
Auto Straddle has put together an incredibly comprehensive timeline of the Thompson and Monáe relationship, which actually goes back to 2015 when Thompson appeared in one of Monáe’s music videos. Since then, they have frequently attended events like movie premieres and awards shows together, and in April, Monáe came out as pansexual in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Basically, then, it seems incredibly likely that Thompson and Monáe are, in fact, dating. But because they care about maintaining their privacy, neither woman has officially confirmed that, and according to Thompson, that has not changed today.
