Is ‘The Muppet Show’ on Disney+? Premiere Date Revealed at Last

Disney has finally confirmed something that Muppet diehards have been waiting to hear for ages: The Muppet Show is officially coming to Disney+.

The Muppets, along with the rest of The Jim Henson Company, were a major acquisition by Disney in 2004. It was, sadly, overshadowed quite a bit in the following decade by the enormous acquisitions of Marvel and Lucasfilm. This was not helped by the fact the company struggled to consistently use the beloved felt ensemble in a way that resonated with most fans.

The Muppet Show ran for five seasons, lasting from 1976 to 1981. While some of the characters that would later become household names had been around before, the series is largely credited with bringing the likes of Kermit the Frog to the mainstream. The series also introduced characters like Ms. Piggy and Fozzy Bear for the first time ever.

This new series skewed more adult than Jim Henson’s prior series, Sesame Street. Each episode took the form of a variety/sketch show, with Kermit attempting to keep his zany colleagues in line so that the show would run smoothly. There were also frequent celebrity guest appearances and musical performances.

Disney confirmed on Twitter that all five seasons of The Muppet Show will be available to stream on Feb. 19. While Disney+ is home to a good amount of Muppet content, the beloved original series has been missing since it launched in Nov. 2019.

“It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more,” Kermit the Frog said in a press release from Disney. “Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.”

On July 31, 2020, Muppets Now premiered as a Disney+ original. The new series aimed to take the variety format of The Muppet Show and update it for the streaming era. The new series earned decent reviews, boasting a 69% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics noting that while it was entertaining enough, not everything worked as well as it could. As of now, it has not been either renewed or canceled.

It remains to be seen if Muppets Now will fare better than Disney’s last attempt to bring the Muppets back to TV. In 2015, The Muppets premiered on ABC with a more adult-skewed edge than the series had had in years. While many enjoyed the revival, some groups took issue with it for not being family-friendly enough. It was canceled after one season.
