Is This Really Why Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice Are Rarely in the Royal Spotlight?
It’s an exciting time to be part of the royal family. After weeks of speculation regarding when Meghan Markle would finally give birth, she and Prince Harry announced on Instagram that the royal baby was finally here — and his name is Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The media is all over Meghan and Harry currently, which is par for the course, as the two have stolen the show since they first began dating.
With the spotlight always on them, it often doesn’t leave much room for other royals to get attention. And that may leave some of the other young-and-upcoming family members, like Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, out of the public eye complete/ly. Aside from Harry and Meghan’s popularity, there may be another reason we don’t often hear about Eugenie and Beatrice, however.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice have infamous parents
Before Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, there were their parents, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew. Fergie and Andrew may be the most infamous royal couple in recent history — and while the two haven’t been romantically linked in many years, they still remain close despite the royal scandals of the past.
Cosmopolitan reminds us Fergie and Andrew separated back in 1992 following a few happy years of marriage — and the separation occurred after an incident that Fergie will never be able to live down. Fergie was unknowingly photographed getting her toes sucked by her financial advisor while she was still legally married to Andrew, which brought great shame upon the royals. And while this was a huge deal at the time, it was far from the last time the media heard of Fergie and Andrew’s messy relationship. She also reportedly was willing to give reporters gossip in exchange for a nominal fee, and The Guardian reports she offered reporters direct access to Prince Andrew for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Eugenie and Beatrice aren’t working royals and they’re often out of the spotlight
Aside from rarely hearing about Eugenie and Beatrice, we often don’t see much of them in regards to royal engagements, either. And this is because the sisters aren’t considered to be working royals. A working royal is a royal family member who works to represent the family at public events and charity causes and gets paid to do so. Prince Harry and Prince William are both working royals, for example, which is also why they’re seen and photographed way more often than Eugenie and Beatrice are. And when you’re working for the royal family, there are also many rules to be followed both on the job and in life in order to keep up the family’s image.
Eugenie and Beatrice are not considered to be working royals. The Daily Express notes they both have jobs that have nothing to do with the royal family, and while they attend a few gatherings here and there and help with a few charitable causes, they don’t help with any formal royal duties. Eugenie currently assists with a London art gallery, and Beatrice works at the U.S.-based tech firm Afiniti.
Are Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew to blame?
Eugenie and Beatrice don’t seem to mind being slightly out of the public eye. And when it comes to big events, like their weddings, we certainly still hear about it. But aside from them not being working royals, they may have their infamous parents to blame when it comes to why they’re more or less on their own.
Royal historian Marlene Koenig told Town & Country, “The sins of the parents have rested on the children. I do believe that if their parents had never gotten divorced and were in a happily married state to this day, Beatrice and Eugenie would be working.” And it looks like Eugenie and Beatrice’s lives apart from the other royals could cause them to drift from Harry and William, too. “Prince Harry’s life will be filled with official engagements …,” royal historian Carolyn Harris noted. “In contrast, Eugenie will continue to be a guest at royal weddings and other family occasions but will be expected to continue to pursue her own independent career rather than represent the monarch at official engagements.”
Do Eugenie and Beatrice mind doing their own thing? It doesn’t appear so. Town & Country notes Princess Beatrice told Vogue, “We are the first: we are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses and doing all of this in the public eye.”
