The Real Reason Issa Rae’s HBO Series ‘Insecure’ Will Not Return Until 2020

HBO giveth and HBO taketh away! After finally putting us out of our misery and delivering the final season of the long-awaited Game of Thrones –we were under the assumption that HBO loved us. Unfortunately, another one of our favorite HBO series is about to remain on an extended hiatus. Issa Rae’s comedic hit, Insecure which follows Los Angeles based besties Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they navigate their personal and professional lives won’t return until 2020.

The series has been a summer favorite since it first premiered in 2016, and fans had been awaiting the Season 4 premiere of Insecure. Now–it looks like we’re going to be waiting until next year.

Why is Insecure Season 4 delayed until 2020?

The reason why Insecure Season 4 is delayed until 2020 is because star and series creator Issa Rae is busy working on other projects. HBO Programming President Casey Bloys told Vulture, “Well, Issa became a big movie star. We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there are a lot more opportunities for people to do things. Issa, I think, partly wanted a break to come back fresh.”

Rae is currently starring in the comedy, Little alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin. She’s also just finished filming, The Lovebirds starring opposite Kumail Nanjiani. Rae is currently shooting The Photograph with LaKeith Stanfield, and she has two other projects in pre-production according to her IMDB.

What can we expect to see on HBO in 2019?

Though Insecure and HBO’s Westworld won’t return until 2020, the network still has a ton of programming premiering this year. Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter, “This year, we increased the volume of programming by 50 percent to 150 hours and there’s not one show in 2019 that we wouldn’t have done two years ago–or five years ago. We were able to do more because of the resources, but we have not sacrificed quality just to get the numbers up. They’re all great shows, and we haven’t made any compromises in the kinds of shows that we’re doing.”

In addition to Game of Thrones, and Season 2 of Big Little Lies, HBO is also premiering the Zendaya-led, Euphoria, which is produced by Drake. Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s A Black Lady Sketch Show is dropping. Also, the Regina Kin- led Watchmen series will debut this year among a slew of other fan favorites.

2020 is just a year away and it will also introduce us to the Game of Thrones prequel which is set to be released as well.
