Jada Pinkett Smith Gets Real in Interview With Will Smith’s Ex-Wife

Jada Pinkett Smith has been a staple in the entertainment industry for well over two decades. However, in the past, the Girls Trip actress has been more reserved, leaving her mega-star husband, Will Smith, to be more open with fans and the public. Now, with some new social media accounts and her Facebook Watch talk show, Red Table Talk, Pinkett Smith is getting candid in a way that we’ve never seen from her before.

In the debut episode of Red Table Talk, Pinkett Smith had a super frank conversation with Will Smith’s ex-wife, Sheree Fletcher, and you’ll never guess what truths were unleashed. The two even revealed how Smith had to put Pinkett Smith in her place after she did something horrible to Fletcher (page 6), and what brought them together as mothers (page 8).

Getting vulnerable

Red Table Talk isn’t simply a talk show for Pinkett Smith; it’s a way for her to open up and share her life with those who’ve watched her grow and blossom over the years. In fact, Pinkett Smith shares hosting duties with her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and her daughter, Willow Smith. The series is also filmed in the Smith’s home. Pinkett Smith told Variety,

For me, what it’s about is to create and fortify safe space and have really unfiltered conversations because right now, in this day and age, the world is changing so much, and we’re trying to figure out how we can change with it, what do our relationships look like, how are we supposed to be parenting our kids, what does it mean to be a woman?

Now we have so many options — so many freedoms — and there are so many ideas that need to expand and grow. So really for us, it was just creating a place where we have permission to talk through that and giving permission for others to do the same.

Pinkett Smith was not playing when she said she wanted to get real on Red Table Talk. In fact, on the very first episode, her guest was Sheree Fletcher, Will Smith’s first wife. Fletcher and Smith were married from 1992 to 1995, and they have a son, Trey Smith, together.

Pinkett Smith admitted during the episode that she and the Bright actor’s relationship overlapped with his first marriage.

The Set It Off actress and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star wed in 1997. But while Smith and Fletcher were still husband and wife, the now married couple crossed the line.

Pinkett Smith explained,

Here’s the one thing I will say in hindsight, because I didn’t understand marriage, I didn’t understand divorce. I will say that I probably should’ve fell back. …. So, when I think back about where I was, some of my insensitivity, some of my inconsideration just in regards to you guys unwinding a marriage, and then me, trying to get in there.

Pinkett Smith revealed her then-naivete about the whole ordeal. “I would’ve fell back because I feel like when Will and I first started dating, you know, I had this thing in my mind, I was like, ‘Oh OK, well you did that and that’s done,'” said Pinkett Smith.

Fletcher clearly thought that was funny, replying with, “Oh, you thought it was done?” Pinkett Smith agreed vigorously, saying that now, if she and Will Smith were to get divorced, she’d be heartbroken.

Pinkett Smith and Fletcher have come an exceptionally long way since the ’90s. In fact, the duo recalled a particularly horrible fight that occurred over the phone back in the day. Pinkett Smith hung up on Fletcher one day when she decided she didn’t appreciate the tone Fletcher had when she was speaking to Trey. Naturally, Fletcher called back.

Fletcher remembered, “I called back and happened to say, ‘B***h, you livin’ in the house I picked out.’ And you said, “It’s my house now.”

Despite any issues that the two women had at the beginning of their relationship, Will Smith was quick to squash it. After that epic phone fight, the actor/rapper pulled his new wife to the side and stressed that Fletcher was to be respected.

Pinkett Smith shared, “Well, I want you to know, that Will Smith let me have it.  His take was, ‘That is Trey’s mother, and that’s just not your place.'”

The one thing the women always did agree on was their love for Trey, and eventually, co-parenting is what bonded them. Fletcher explained that initially she was opposed to her son meeting Pinkett Smith.

She revealed, “So Trey comes home, and I said, “How did you like Miss Jada?” He said, “I really like her Mommy.” Thank you for loving my baby. I’ll tell you, on this side of things, my son could not have a better bonus mom.”

Pinkett- Smith added choking back tears, “And he’s got a great mother.”

Talking about old wounds with Fletcher isn’t the only topic that Pinkett Smith, her mother, and her daughter discuss on Red Table Talk. The trio also discusses Williow’s introduction to sex which happened when she walked in on her parents. Pinkett Smith also uses the platform to reconcile with actress Gabrielle Union with whom she had a 17-year feud, though neither of the women knows why it started.

The women also took the time to chat about the #MeToo Movement and what it means for Black women in particular. Pinkett Smith explained,

To me, all of these movements are geared towards us redefining what it is to be a woman and hopefully getting to a place where it can be an autonomous definition — because not every woman is the same. I just feel like these movements are moving us into the direction of each individual woman having to ask herself what does it mean to be a woman for her? There’s no one answer.
