Jameela Jamil: Meghan Markle Will Not Be Silenced by the UK Press That is ‘Terrified’ of Her
Meghan Markle has found a loyal supporter in The Good Place star Jameela Jamil. The Duchess of Sussex has been going through a rough time lately, and Jamil recently defended her against a UK press that she believes is “terrified” of her. The comments could not have come at a better time for Markle, who opened up about her struggles in a new documentary.
Jameela Jamil comes to Meghan Markle’s defense
Jamil discussed Markle during a red-carpet appearance for the 2019 Girl Up #GirlHero Awards in California.
The actress had no idea that Markle helped edit the edition of Vogue that featured her on the cover. But she found out when the Duchess of Sussex called her on her home phone to congratulate her on the achievement.
Jamil revealed that Markle was super kind on the phone and praised her for all the work she does to empower women and women of color around the world.
According to Express, Jamil also explained how Markle knew all of the women who were featured in the magazine and gave each one of them a phone call. She then assured fans that Markle knows what she’s talking about when it comes to gender equality.
She went on to criticize the British media for how they constantly hound Markle and put her in a negative light. Although Meghan Markle has been through a lot, Jamil believes she is being targeted because everyone is actually afraid of her.
“I think the press in England is terrified and that’s why they’re trying to silence her but she stands against bullies,” Jamil shared. “And standing up to bullies is really the only way you can put them in their place.”
Jamil’s comments come after Markle’s revealing interview in the new documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.
Markle opens up about her struggles
In the interview, Markle admitted that constantly living under the spotlight as a member of the royal family has not been easy. While she was used to fame starring on the hit series, Suits, transitioning to life as a royal was on a whole different level.
At one point, Markle revealed that she feels like she is barely surviving behind the scenes, which is hard for a person who has thrived in the limelight her entire career.
“I’ve said for a long time to H – that’s what I call him – it is not enough to just survive something, right?” Markle shared.
The former actress added that she tried to ignore the bad press and develop a stiff upper lip like most Brits, but her efforts ultimately failed.
Instead, she bottled up her emotions and started to feel the weight of the stress like never before. Things did not get any better during her pregnancy, and Markle has really struggled ever since giving birth to Archie Harrison.
The bombshell interview came after Markle and Prince Harry returned home from their 10-day tour of South Africa. It also comes amid an ongoing lawsuit between the Sussexes and a number of different British tabloids, some of whom published sensitive information about Markle.
Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle miserable?
Between the lawsuit and recent interview, some royal experts believe Prince Harry and Markle are completely miserable at the moment. While it was good for them to get things off their chest in the interview, Prince Harry is reportedly struggling after what proved to be an emotional trip to South Africa.
The couple honored Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, throughout the trip, but retracing her steps was more difficult than he anticipated. In fact, some experts believe that the tour sparked another “wave of agony” for Prince Harry, who is still dealing with issues related to his mother’s tragic death.
To make things even worse, Markle is struggling with issues of her own, which only compounds the couple’s woes. Luckily, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be getting a much-needed break from the royal family next month.
The pair is expected to travel to Los Angeles to visit Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland. They are reportedly planning on staying in the area for six weeks, giving Ragland plenty of time with her daughter and new grandson.
It is unclear if Prince Harry and Markle will be appearing at any royal events during their stay, but fans are hoping to catch a few glimpses of Archie Harrison before they return to England.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not commented on the rumors surrounding their mental health.
