James Charles premiered his ‘James Charles x Morphe’ palette last year
Since creating his YouTube channel, James Charles has been thrown into the public eye. Recently, the makeup artist was involved in a feud with YouTuber Tati Westbrook. He was the first male Covergirl, he walked the red carpet, and became one of the internet’s favorite beauty gurus, earning millions of views on his videos.
One of the most important aspects of James Charles’ career was his collaboration with the makeup brand, Morphe. Together, they created the James Charles palette, an eye shadow palette comprised of 39 bold and bright colors. Now, there’s a new eye shadow by Wet n Wild and James Charles fans are suspicious of.
Wet n Wild launched a palette that looks surprisingly similar to James Charles’
It has been about a year since James Charles launched his eye shadow palette with Morphe. Now, Wet n Wild plans to launch a makeup palette, showcased at this year’s RuPaul’s DragCon in New York City. Almost instantly, fans on social media made connections to the James Charles palette, both in colors and in the palette’s layout. Within a few hours,
“There are only so many colors you can put into an eye shadow palette and I’m not claiming to ‘own’ specific colors,” James Charles tweeted. “But when you copy the exact shades and layout from my palette without even trying to hide it?”
While some fans sided with James Charles, others pointed out differences between the two palettes. Can James Charles sue Wet n Wild for a similar eye shadow palette layout?
Will James Charles sue Wet n Wild?
As of right now, James Charles has only accused the makeup company of copying his eye shadow palette. It doesn’t look like any lawsuit is looming in the distance. Still, fans are siding with the YouTuber, some are saying Wet n Wild should take back their newest makeup item. Others stated that James Charles loosely based his palette on those that were previously released.
“I don’t understand how you’re complaining, but you took your palette layout from Morphe 35b palette or whatever and you stay ‘recreating,’ (and I say that loosely,) looks from other smaller artist and try to pass them as your own,” said one Twitter user. “But please continue with your Ted Talk.”
“Let’s break it down for the delusional James Charles stans in here. James can’t sue Wet n Wild because James didn’t create his palette with Morphe. He was likely given samples of different palettes from the manufacturer Morphe uses, and he chose one. End of story. Get over it,” said another Twitter user.
The James Charles palette is still available for purchase at Sephora, Ulta, and most major beauty retailers.
