James Corden’s ‘Spill Your Guts’ Segment Slammed for Anti-Asian Racism

As the host of a 12-time Emmy nominated talk show, it’s safe to say James Corden has done very well for himself in his career as the host of The Late Late Show. The segments of the popular talk show have made it what it is today.

However, one of its most popular segments, Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts, has recently been criticized for anti-Asian racism and petitioned to be modified or removed. There’s no word on how the host and show will respond, but viewers are ready to see a change.

The Late late Show follows the popular talk show The Late Show, premiering in January 1995 and going strong still today. The first host of the show was Tom Snyder until ’99, followed by Craig Kilborn until 2004, Craig Ferguson until 2014, and then most recently — James Corden.

The show has several popular recurring segments. There’s Carpool Karaoke, Drop the Mic, The Bold and the Lyrical, Riff-Off, Take a Break, Crosswalk the Musical, Aftershows, and Celebrity Noses. Then there’s also Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts, Flinch, Were You Paying Attention?, Honest Headlines, Emoji News, None of the Above, Audience Q&A, and Side Effects May Include.

Until recently, all the above segments have been quite popular, bringing millions of viewers almost every episode, with some of the most popular celebrities making appearances to partake in the games. That is until it was recently pointed out that one of them is anti-Asian.

The ‘Spill Your Guts’ segment is what’s being slammed for anti-Asian racism

Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts is a segment on The Late Late Show that makes celebrity guests play a game of Truth or Dare, essentially. The guest is asked (and asks James Corden) a series of questions… If the respondents do not want to answer the very personal question, they are required to eat a series of foods in front of them deemed “disgusting.”

In past episodes, these foods have consisted of COD sperm, sardine smoothies, fish eyes, grasshoppers, bull penises, bird saliva, chicken feet, 1,000-year-old eggs, beef tongue, pig blood curd, and more.

Although the popular segment has been highly rated over the past couple of years, there have been talks of it being ‘problematic.’ In fact, Spoon University author Emily Wallace brought it up in 2017, saying that “all of these dishes — and most of the foods featured on the show — are actually common or even delicacies in various Asian cultures, particularly in China and Japan.”

The author added, “These foods are not as strange as Western culture may lead people to think. As a Chinese-American with immigrant parents, my family regularly eats braised chicken feet at the dim sum restaurant near our home in small-town New Hampshire,” among many other Spill Your Guts ingredients.

However, it wouldn’t be until 2021 that action was taken to make a change.

Recent backlash towards the segment includes a petition with 40,000+ signatures

A viral TikTok video was posted to the site by social media influencer Kim Saira and captioned, “ok, but this is actual Asian food & youre going on live tv telling people how gross it is. that’s cringe.” This video lead to a petition by the same author on change.org to “Remove ‘Spill Your Guts’ Segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden.”

The petition has received 43,001 signatures of its goal of 50,000 so far.

According to AJ+, Saira explained, “Looking at how Asian hate has been increasing this year and last year, I just thought it would have been the right decision to try to pull the plug on this segment or entirely change it.”

There’s no saying how Corden and The Late Late Show are going to respond, but it’s safe to say that with these numbers backing its modification or removal — they may have no choice but to listen.
