James Gunn Confirms When ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is Coming Out

Director James Gunn has confirmed when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released.

Gunn is quite active on social media and frequently takes questions from fans on his Facebook page, and in the comments section of a recent post, Gunn was asked when the third Guardians film is coming out. He responded by confirming that it’ll arrive in a little under three years, i.e. the summer of 2020.

This is something that had been widely assumed, as there was a three year gap between the first and second Guardians film. Gunn had also previously suggested on Facebook that we’d probably see more of the Guardians in three years. Marvel has not officially confirmed that Vol. 3 is being released in 2020, but it sounds like Gunn is fairly confident that this is when the film will come out.

Gunn also said in this Facebook comments section that he would not direct Star Wars: Episode IX if he was asked, only because he’s going to be busy with Guardians for the next few years.

Marvel has already announced that in 2020, it will release movies on May 1, August 7, and November 6. The studio hasn’t yet revealed what films will come out when, but it seems likely that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will open on May 1. After all, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened on the first Friday in May, and it ended up being extraordinarily successful, grossing $389 million at the domestic box office. It grossed much more than the first film, which opened in August, and so Marvel will probably want to keep the Guardians in May.

Although it’s still a few years away, there are already some major films slated for release in 2020, including Godzilla vs. KongMinions 2Indiana Jones 5Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3Avatar 2, plus announced superhero films from Fox, D.C. and Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in 2020 also means that there will be four summers in a row featuring movies that star the Guardians. 2017 brought fans Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; in 2018, the Guardians will fight alongside the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War; in 2019, they will continue doing so in the untitled fourth Avengers film; and in 2020, they will return for their own adventure. James Gunn has said that Vol. 3 will be the final chapter for this version of the team.
