Women supporting women has been an emerging theme for the past few years, especially in the entertainment industry. Two such talented beings are Lady Gaga and Janelle Monáe, both incredible performers with unique styles. Both are popular musicians who also dabble in acting, and have earned accolades across genres. But are Lady Gaga and Janelle Monáe friends in real life?

They were both 2019 Grammy nominees

The recent conversations about the two began after they attended the 2019 Grammy Awards. Both were nominees in different categories: Monáe for Album of the Year for Dirty Computer, and Gaga for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year for “Shallow,” plus Best Pop Solo Performance for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” Gaga won both Performance awards, sharing the first with her A Star is Born costar Bradley Cooper.

Though Monáe didn’t win in her category, she did put on a spectacular performance, singing her hit “Make Me Feel” featuring snippets from her other hits “PYNK” and “Django Jane.” During the number, a journalist in the crowd took a video of Gaga rocking out to Monáe. Monáe later retweeted the video, adding, “I love youuuuu QUEEN  @ladygaga !!”

Gaga and Monáe were photographed together during the show

Clearly, the love wasn’t just for show. During the ceremony, Gaga and Monáe were photographed together holding hands and posing for the camera in their epic award show attire. Monáe even later shared the image in her own Instagram story, tagging Gaga.

They have been going to the same events for years

As with most who work in the same industry, Gaga and Monáe have been going to the same award shows and events since their careers began. Back in 2015, both performed at Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life, an event celebrating the acclaimed musician. This was just days after the 2015 Grammy Awards. Though not together, the two were captured on stage at the same time.

Monáe has expressed admiration for Gaga in the past

This mutual love goes back nearly a decade. Back in 2010, after her single “Tightrope” was released, Monáe told the Associated Press, “Lady Gaga, I think she’s awesome. She’s openly said that she’s been a supporter of me, and I do appreciate that. I think that what she’s doing is very fun, and I get the sense that she’s her own boss. Nobody’s telling her to do anything.”

There’s also a history of celebrating each other’s Grammy performances. At the 2016 Grammys, Gaga performed a tribute to David Bowie. Monáe tweeted, “LADY GAGA!!!! Now I’m really going home!!! Amazing!!!! Bowie is smiling combing his hair back right now I know.”

They share a love of both singing and acting

In addition to their impressive singing careers, both Gaga and Monáe are actors. Monáe had roles in two of the most-nominated films of 2016, Hidden Figures and Moonlight. This year, Gaga has been up for both musical and acting awards for A Star Is Born. Gaga won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for “Shallow, and she was captured at an afterparty holding her award and talking to Monáe.
