Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux: What They Previously Revealed About Their Marriage
Few stars have held our collective attention as long as Jennifer Aniston. The Friends star, who was previously married to Brad Pitt, has been happy with actor and writer Justin Theroux for several years now. And the media continues its obsession with her and her relationship — even after they announced their separation on Feb. 15, 2018.
The pair, who married in 2015, has often been cited as a shining example of a Hollywood couple. Here’s what they’ve previously said about their marriage.
They tried to keep things private
If Theroux and Aniston were known for anything as a couple, it’s how little we knew about their private lives. Aside from interviews with major publications promoting their upcoming projects, it’s rare to find a quote from either of them.
This dates back to the beginning of their relationship, including their wedding. The affair took place in their backyard, and many of their guests believed they were attending a celebration for Theroux’s birthday. Even Howard Stern, who gave a toast, wasn’t allowed to spill the beans. “I was so nervous,” he once said. “They’re so secretive, those two.”
They faced gossip in their own way
Because of how infrequently they’re seen out and about, the couple deals with a lot of tabloid gossip. Theroux joked earlier this year about all of the insane headlines he’s seen about them, “Someone should give a clinical diagnosis of one year in our lives. It would be super funny.”
Aniston herself took to the internet in 2016 to share her thoughts on the constant rumors about her being pregnant. Among other things, she noted that “the objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing.”
They’re (still) best friends
While appearing on Ellen, Theroux was asked to weigh in on a heavy debate: Who is Aniston’s best friend, Reese Witherspoon or Degeneres herself? Theroux took a neutral stance and also threw himself into the race. “Well, I’m Jen’s — one of Jen’s — best friends. I don’t want to get competitive though.”
In the public statement announcing their separation, the two maintained their friendship is still strong, saying, “We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.”
They once said they had ‘found a rhythm’
Both Aniston and Theroux are very busy in showbiz, which may be part of what led to their separation. But according to People, in the past, the distance has made “their marriage more exciting.”
“Justin can still make Jen blush,” said the source. “She still talks about how she finds him very sexy. Not seeing each other every day makes them appreciate each other more.”
They always shared a sense of humor
Both actors have major comedy chops and met while working on the comedy film Wanderlust together, so it comes as no surprise that “[t]hey love to laugh and share a wicked sense of humor.” They also love to joke about one another.
In an interview, Aniston lovingly referred to her husband as a “turkey.” And Theroux, when asked about what he would be getting Aniston for their second anniversary, teased, “Isn’t number two cotton? Am I supposed to get something cotton? So probably just a bag of cotton.”
They did their best to roll with the punches
As it turns out, Aniston is quite the home-improvement expert. In an interview with actress and friend Amy Sedaris, she said about renovating, “I love it. I’m getting antsy to do another project.”
Despite taking her taking the reigns, it sounds like Theroux was usually on board with this hobby. Aniston told Sedaris, “We walked in one day after they’d been doing the demo, and he was like, ‘Holy shit. What are we doing?’ And I was like, ‘We’re redoing the house, babe. We gotta take the wall down to put up a nicer one.’”
They supported each other’s work
It can be hard for any couple to not “TV cheat” on their significant other, but for one that spends this much time apart, it’s almost impossible. Still, they have one rule: No spoilers.
When discussing his HBO drama The Leftovers, which finished its three-season run this summer, Theroux explained that he couldn’t even tell Aniston about what he was filming before it aired. “She’s a fan of the show, so she didn’t want any spoilers,” he said. “She wouldn’t even want to run lines with me … She’s that much of a fan.”
They remain united in their separation announcement
The day after Valentine’s Day 2018, the story broke: Aniston and Theroux were separating. As the internet rang out with sadness while reading the official statement:
In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation. This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.
Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.
