Jennifer Lopez Isn’t the Only Celebrity PETA Has Publicly Criticized
You may not know it, but Jennifer Lopez has had a feud with PETA (aka People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for a long time now.
Since Lopez is a fan of fur-based fashion, PETA has apparently referred to her wardrobe as a “corpse closet” and even went so low as to imply that the reason one of her husbands left was because of her love of fur.
Lopez not only wears fur a lot but also uses it in her clothing line, so it’s not a huge surprise that PETA would come for her like that.
Still, whether you’re an animal lover or not, it’s hard to deny that PETA’s methods can be a bit extreme, and they have used their intense tactics to shame a lot of celebrities over the years.
Here are a few other famous people who have found themselves in PETA’s crosshairs:
It all started in 2012 when Lady Gaga was seen in public wearing a variety of fur-based coats.
PETA was especially mad because she had apparently told Ellen that she hated wearing fur, so they thought she was being a total hypocrite.
They wrote an open letter calling her out, but it took a creepy (and sort of bully-ish) turn when Vice President of PETA Dan Mathers said Gaga was “making herself a target” for extremist attacks. Not cool, PETA!
Of course, you know Lady Gaga was ready with the comeback, offering “I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it [hypocritical] not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cowhide, leather, lamb, alligator, ‘Kermit’ and not to mention meat, that I have already worn.”
Seems like Gaga doesn’t have time to sweat Mathers’ thinly veiled threats.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
Anyone who has seen a photo of the girl knows Kim Kardashian loves her leather and fur clothing. Add to that all the meat she eats on her diet and she’s just the type of celebrity PETA would be likely to attack.
In fact, they literally attacked her once by throwing flour on her when she was seen in public wearing a fur outfit.
As for hubby Kanye West, he released a song with the line “tell PETA my mink is draggin’ on the floor” and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they didn’t take too kindly to that.
But who knows, maybe getting targeted by activists is a great way for a couple to get closer?
Like West, Jennifer Lawrence once made a dismissive comment about PETA and they didn’t exactly take it in stride. There was a scene in her movie Winter’s Bone where she had to skin a squirrel.
When she was asked about whether the squirrel was real or not in an interview, Lawrence apparently said “I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA. But screw PETA.”
This time PETA took the high road for once, issuing a fairly even-handed reply: “When people kill animals, it is the animals who are ‘screwed,’ not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature.”
PETA may have kept calm when it came to Lawrence, but what they said to Ashley Olsen is pretty unforgivable.
Back when Olsen was publically suffering from an eating disorder, PETA decided to criticize her habit of wearing fur by saying “Wearing fur does add 20 pounds, but if Ashley wants to fill out her frame, we suggest using a fork instead.”
It’s absolutely outrageous that PETA would use someone’s illness as a way to bully them. Seems like Jennifer Lopez actually didn’t get the worst of it.
