‘Jeopardy!’ fans sound off on Instagram about Dr. Oz

Jeopardy! posted the announcement of Dr. Oz’s debut on its Instagram page, which was met with some pushback from longtime fans.

“Not watching. Can’t support someone who spreads misinformation,” one fan wrote. “Won’t be watching this week. Disappointing choice,” another commented. “Whoever made the call to let him host should be GONE,” a viewer posted.

“Thanks for the warning, @jeopardy. See you in a couple weeks when there’s an intelligent host behind the lectern,” one wrote.

Some viewers made their plea for previous guest hosts Ken Jennings and executive producer Mike Richards to return to the quiz board.

“Still waiting for Ken Jennings or Mike Richards to be back running Jeopardy!. Nothing against Dr Oz or Katie Couric but Ken and Mike are amazing in my opinion,” one fan remarked. Another simply petitioned for Jennings, writing, “I’ll say it again: bring back Ken!!!”

Dr. Oz shared fond memories of ‘Jeopardy!’ host Alex Trebek

Dr. Oz was a longtime friend of Jeopardy! icon Alex Trebek, who died in November 2020 due to pancreatic cancer. He shared some memories of how Trebek helped him acclimate to showbiz when he first started his talk show, The Dr. Oz Show, in 2009.

“I remember sitting on this stage the very first year of my show, and I really wasn’t known to anybody,” Dr. Oz said in a video for Jeopardy! “Alex took me under his arm and shared with me some of his insight about how he hosted the show and how he worked with the people – how he built a culture that remains today, of people who really care about each other.”

Trebek’s kindness remained with Dr. Oz over the years, and the two formed a lasting bond.

“The fact that he did that with someone who was really not proficient at this art, back in the very beginning of my career, which really changed my trajectory, meant the world to me,” he said.

Dr. Oz admitted to being ‘anxious’ as guest host of ‘Jeopardy!’

With Jeopardy!’s reputation as the gold standard of game shows under Trebek’s tenure as host, Dr. Oz knew he had big shoes to fill.

“I was anxious about hosting Jeopardy!,” the talk show star remarked. “I didn’t actually understand all the parts and how they moved, but I also wanted to make sure I showed up the way the show needs me to show up. Be able to carry on a conversation with people when they’re in a stressful situation.”

Dr. Oz credited the Jeopardy! staff and crew for helping him find his footing in his guest hosting role.

“As soon as I got here, and I met a team that’s unbelievably talented at getting you to appreciate what really matters about the show, it all went away,” he explained. “I began to get into the zone and feel relaxed. … There’s a lot of things going on and as a host, you really feel challenged to make sure you can achieve a little bit of what Alex Trebek did for all those years.”
